Dealing with crisis...sober.

Like many people I drank "at" things. I drank at good news, bad news, successes, failures and problems. The alcohol never fixed a single thing, in fact, it made most of them worse.

Recently I have been dealing with one of my bigger crisis's to date. I am trying to save my house. I got hurt badly 2 years ago and had to sell my business. I have not worked in almost two years. I've had some pretty intense phone conversations with the bank, loan officers, credit specialists and so on. It has not been fun and very stressful. But with some perseverance and remaining calm I believe we have succeeded. Not only in saving our house but in cashing out some much needed equity. I'm not entirely out of the woods but very close. It's a far cry from 2 weeks ago when I was served with papers notifying me of the Sheriff's sale of my home.

This would not have happened if I was still drinking. Instead I would be pissed off and packing boxes. Sobriety is a real advantage in life.

I seem to be handling not so perfect situations better while sober.. Like you, while drinking, I'd be drunk saying 'f it' and start packing. Now I'm able to clearly see the different options, weigh them and choose the best course of action. I'm sure sometimes things still don't/won't work but, it's better while sober and I go 'course shopping'.

Congrats on moving through such a difficult time without relapsing!

Your post could not have come at a better time Thomas!!!

My husband and I have been dealing with an issue regarding our business that has been looming since last fall. Bottom line, our opps manager, someone we considered to be family (was often at our home, husband took him shopping for clothes for work, we spent a lot of time with him outside of work...), screwed us over big time! This guy who we looked at as a son (we never had children) went behind our back, low balled our #'s and took over our last account. He lied to us when he gave us his resignation, said he was moving.

At the time, I knew it sounded screwy and I suspected that our "Golden Boy" was up to no good. There's a lot of reasons that it didn't make sense, I won't go into details. The problem was, we had no proof. Today we received the proof we were looking for. One of our old contractors, who is now contracting with our "GB" at the account we lost to him...called us to tell us he hasn't been paid in 6 weeks and needed advise regarding what we thought he should do about getting paid. Vuala...

DH said "f*** It" and he bought a bottle vodka...the proceeded to try to hide it from me. TBH, I was right on the verge of doing the same...I mean, it was the closest I've come in the last 6 weeks to giving in. Instead, I told DH he didn't need to continue to hide his drink, made dinner immediately, ate, came here to post. WHEW!!! ::::BREATHING::::

Thank you so much for your post...reading it and responding walked me away from the edge.

What a huge relief for you, Jeff. I drank at everything too - with disastrous results. We only think we're helping ourselves cope - instead we just add more troubles on top of the existing problem. Facing life clearheaded is the only way.
Took me decades to admit that.

Thanks for an encouraging & helpful post.

Jeff,
You are a good man. i am in my middle fifties and have had to deal with two really bad times in my life. Now looking back I don't regret them. They helped mold me into the man I am today.

You are facing your problems head on with bravery. I respect that greatly. I believe , no I know that good things happen for people like you. I know good things are in your future. Please be proud that you stood up to adversity when these days most people just run and hide. Good for you for doing it sober my friend.

HI Matt, I don't want to overlook anyone else's responses but I want to address yours. I am about your age and I happen to agree with you 100%. The trials and tribulations we endured when we were younger make us who we are today. My only wish is that I was like many of the twenty somethings on this forum that figured it out so young.
With that said, I am thankful that I've figured it out. Some folks never get that opportunity. I guess we take what we can and run with it and be grateful we are not on the street or in a casket.

Fingers crossed, hope it works out as you planned. You're right- it's easier to deal with life's issues when you're sober.

Good news Jeff, I am so glad that things are looking better- and that you didn't succumb to a drink over it!
