todays the day
never realised i had a problem until now, drinking is such a part of the Irish culture
i have been abusing alcohol for the last couple of years , its steadily got worse , recently the blackouts started and the strange behavior , my short term memory has also been effected ,
i want to be sober now , want to feel well and healthy
does the memory come back and the blackouts stop ??
thanks in advance

Hello and welcome. Congratulations on your decision to stop.
It got progressive with me, too. Had plenty of blackouts. The memories from the blackouts never come back, if that's is what you meant.
I still remember coming out of them in some pretty strange and sometimes dangerous places. And coming to the next day laying next to a woman I didn't know.
Scary stuff.
Good news is, stop drinking and the blackouts stop.
Stick around here, you'll find lots of support.

Hi Jack - it's so good to have you here.
I went through several phases as I began to heal - my memory did come back. In many ways I felt reborn. I'm glad you're acknowledging that things need to change - you'll never regret reclaiming your life.

day 2 ,,,, woke up this morning feeling reasonably healthy ,, not that i really got bad hangovers , mostly felt tired and fragile ,
thats another recent development in my drinking ,, up until about a year ago i used to get terrible hangovers
so the signs were all visible if i was sober enough to see them
thanks so much everyone for the kind words of encouragement ,,,

Hi Jack..
I don't post often, I seem to lurk. I've obviously not felt 'serious' enough about quitting for good (it's scary!) so I just read. I feel different now though,
The longest I have this month is 4 days straight (no booze) and a lot of drinking vs non drinking days. Good luck, I am on day two with you!

Im from Dublin so i get the whole irish drinking culture! Ive been off it for 5 weeks now and going strong. The only thing that will get me is family gatherings which most of the time theres drinking involved. My father in laws birthday is coming up next week and he knows i havent been drinking. When i was talking to him he said "ah sure maybe youll have a few!" everyone knows when i drink i drink everything and anything but they don't understand the seriousness of it. Change is hard for people to except I suppose. Anyway good luck to you!
