Day 1

Hi I'm new and on day1. I hate day 1, but struggle to get past day 3. My simple hope is to interact with others who have succeed to get past the early days. Thanks.....

I'm off work for the next 5 days so I am hoping to just do one day at a time. But I know day 3 and on until the urges pass will be a problem. I lose out to the sudden urge. Just runs me over, maybe if I keep reading the threads here I can make it through. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. Well I'm trying something new by being here.

Early recovery is the time to allow all that
poison and toxins to leave the body. It takes
time for this horrible stuff to run its course
and exit all parts of the body.

Just like a car. In order for it to run right
and perform its best would mean to let
all the bad stuff run and burn off. Then
you can begin to replace it with all the
good fluids and gas, new belts etc that
will make it run like new.

You can use your own analogy in place
of a car of course.

This is a good time to pick up some good
directions, suggestions to help fill your
recovery tool box to reach for when those
ugly temptations rear its head and use to
help you remain sober one more day.

Removing all alcohol in the house so
that it wont be easy to reach for when
that voice comes calling to say that its
okay to drink just one drink. Then you
will have face the guilt and shame for failing
or feeling weak in any moment.

Remember you never have to go thru
this recovery process alone or by urself.
Many have found success in recovery
because they have a lifeline, support
to rely on the carry them, hold them up
when a moment of weakness pops up.

Hold on tight and ask if you need help,
or if you don't understand something,
suggestions to guide you into remaining
sober one more day.

SR is here for you always.

As newly sober myself (day 104) I remember the beginning. I had that beginning may times just like everyone else I've read on here.

What I realized this time is the cravings are like a wave. Subtle, strong, subtle again. When it's all new you think that once it gets to strong its going to stay there forever. Not the case. The longer you stay sober the shorter the strong urge becomes. In my case I still get the strong urge (or high point of the wave) but it last less than a minute. I can see the calm seas on the horizon. Be careful of social situations in the beginning. Also many people asked me why I wasn't drinking. I didn't shy away from my issues, once I could admit it to myself I could admit it to anyone. I say "Because I got too good at it". The smart ones understand...

"The secret to pollution is dilution". Drink lots of water to flush out the toxins quicker.

You are not alone on this journey.

Thank you all for the support. Part of what has made me fail in the past is attempting to do this alone. So I'm glad to have your encouragement. Jack I'm glad your hear to begin this journey too. The house is clean, no alcohol at all. I'm not a bottle hider, but when that stupid urge hits on day three I end up going and buying something. Funny how on day one you feel like quitting but then there is that moment as time goes on that your mind begins to justify a drink. That lying voice. I to have turned my life over to a higher power a long time ago. But praying alone won't make day three or four or whatever a sober day. I believe God provides people like here to support each other on this journey, because getting rid of alcohol is very hard to do alone.

Read my first post. Day 3 was my enemy too. Now I never crave. How could I crave the remorse, guilt, and shame?

Day 1 complete. I hope this is truly my last time I think about day one. Anxieties, well here they come, oh well. Bring on day 2 and let's see if I can survive. Deep breaths, positive thoughts, and checking back here often for a reality check.

Welcome to SR, and great job getting past day one!!!

This site helped me to get sober, and you can definitely do the same. Two great threads are the 24 hour thread, and the monthly classes. You should join the class of March 2017, it helps to have others who have also committed or recommitted to sobriety this month.

Looking forward to seeing you on here!

Thanks Delilah, I'm glad there are others who believe that this chapter of lifecan be closed. Day two starts. Normally this is where my brain starts to justify or stressors create the anxieties. I have had it go the other way wher on day three I start to feel great, and then I need to celebrate.....whatever that really means. Seems more like sabotaging myself. Either way the end result is the same. Another day 1. I really want this, I want to be a better role model for my kids. I also know that I'll have some heart issues to resolve once I get stable on the non drinking side. I've been medicating and hiding them for a few years. But I'm guessing this will cause them to resurface. I'm not looking forward to those processes. Today is enough.....deep breath.....day 2. Here we go............

Welcome simply free. Well done on getting past the first day. I am glad you found this forum.

Very good idea to read, read, read here when you are craving. Post here if the cravings gets too much.

I also attend AA and it has been a Godsend to me. Daily prayer and meditation help me too.

Keep going, the only day you have to get through is today.

Prayers and blessings.

Hi SimplyFree!

Like everyone else here, I found getting past a few days very difficult. I honestly thought that if I wanted to stay sober, I would have to fight intense cravings and the mental obsession for the rest of my life... This just isn't true.

If you are physically addicted then it takes time to get past the initial stage. But it does get easier after a week or two. I'm at 2 months or so and am amazed at how the obsession with drinking has almost disappeared.

When you are in the grip of an active addiction it may seem hopeless and difficult, but that is your addiction speaking, keeping you weak and priming you to drink more. Ignore it at keep going.

Great name BTW.
