I had my last alcoholic drink sometime in the final week of 2015. Today my wife has gone away to another city to work. This leaves me on my own. In fact it's the first time I have been on my own since my last drink. This was once seen as an opportunity to indulge, and normally I would have already been sat here with booze on the table in front of me, a mere couple of hours after she had left.

Thank God I know now that to drink will lead me on a path to ruination. Thank God that I now understand, and accept, that have no chance of drinking 'sensibly' or 'socially', and that it is a cast iron guarantee that the first drink will render me a puking shaking wretch within 3 days.

To anyone who finds themselves on their own please accept that you have no chance of getting away with a few drinks. None at all.

Once I accepted the fact that I could never have another drink is when I began my recovery. Congratulations!

Awesome and inspiring post. A great reminder that it's the first drink that does the damage. And if I avoid ever taking that first drink again, I am golden.
