Percoset withdrawal

Recently I had hip arthroscopic surgery to repair my torn labrum. I was on 5/325 Percosets for about 4 months. Dr prescribed 40 pills for a 5 day supply, which would last about 8 days, so 5 a day. Just called for a refill and doctors assistant said he is at his limit and I need to see pain mgmt dr if still pain, which I am. A lot of it. Now pain mgmt dr doesn't have any appointments available until Monday (5 days away). I have 2 pills left. How bad will my withdrawal symptoms be? I'm scared and nervous and still in a lot of pain. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi Mama. What does your doctor mean by "at his limit"? Wouldn't he give you a refill if you really need it?

A few years ago I was prescribed pain meds for a back problem. I was on them for quite some time. When my doctor took me off the meds, she prescribed Baclofen. It really helped me with any withdrawal.

I think you should go back to your dr who prescribed the pills and ask for his advice on withdrawal.

I'm not really sure what the assistant meant. She just said he is at his limit and the dr doesn't really do more than 3 refills after surgery; that I needed to see the pain specialist. I originally left a message and she called back within a few minutes. I feel as if she didn't even talk to the dr. I left another message and haven't heard back. When I had my 4 week post op (I am 7 weeks now), Dr. sent over a renewal with no questions asked. I'm very frustrated. I guess I will have to call again in the morning.

Hi mamabear, I've been through this. My initial pain meds were prescribed by my surgeon, then after a short period of time he passed it on to my regular doctor. If their was a problem (and there was on occasion) I called my surgeons office and explained what was going on. But it can't be abused or they'd cut me off, quickly. Another thing you can try is a different pain med. He might be at his limit for percocet but could prescribe oxycodone. Obviously not sure what the rules are in your area. As far as withdrawals, with the amount you are taking they should be minimal. I was taking about 40-60 mg of oxycodone for a year and got off them with not "too much" of a problem.

hi and welcome mamabear

I have no experience with percoset.

I would feel a little fobbed off too.
I would make an appointment and see your Dr face to face or at least by telephone.

Express the urgency of your situation.

You can try calling back to let them know you are in extreme pain and have a scheduled appointment. At least from my experience, as long as you have a confirmed appointment they usually will give you enough to hold you over until that appointment.
If they still refuse, try asking them to prescribe something else.

Hi everyone. Thank you for all of your replies. I finally convinced my surgeon to prescribe more until I was able to get to see the pain specialist, which I saw today. He is going to wean me off the pills by first 5 days only 4 a day, next 5, 3 a day etc. As far as the pain, he suggested a hip nerve block, which I was hope will help with my pain. If I do get relief, then the nerve will be burned (I forget the technical term). Also said if I develop any withdrawal symptoms, he can prescribe Clondine, which I am hoping I won't need! Thank you all again for your replies!!!
