Just can't stop

How can I stop? I make plans but they don't work. Can't afford rehab.

Mattq2 03-01-2017 05:31 PM

Bhudson,
Are you new to SR? The reason I asked is I felt exactly has you did. Nothing worked to keep me sober for more than a day or two.

SR was exactly what I needed to get me over the top.

Have you tried AA? Or some other formal recovery program?

It's difficult to quit drinking on your own. We are here to support you.

Throw the booze in the trash and never buy any again.

Dee74 03-01-2017 05:45 PM

If you haven;t considered AA or some other recovery group now might be a time to reconsider?

If all else fails, sometimes the best plan is to get rid of all the alcohol in your house, stay on SR, and sit on your car keys for few days bhudsontuck.

You can stop drinking, you just haven't done it yet. I'd advise seeing your doctor for medical help in getting thru detox.

You can do this!

Take some time to read and post here. There is lots of support and plenty of helpful tips. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed at the moment. Stay focused on the day and do whatever you need to do to get through it sober.

I have horrible news for the alcoholic living in your head: You aren't the worst ever and you can stop.

You'll get more out of this forum and community if you put more effort into it. What have you tried? What are you willing to try?

Best of Luck on Your Journey. :ring

welp, someone on here says
ya have to want to be sober more than ya want to drink.

your plans don't work.....hhhmmm is it the plans don't work or you don't work the plans?
the only way my plans for recovery worked were by putting as much effort into them as i did getting a drink.

theres state/federally funded rehabs.

it doesn't seem like coming here now and then and saying ya need help is a good part of your plan. ya might wanna stick around and start communicating more

Lots of ways to get and stay sober. In my case, absolute surrender was needed before I could even consider recovery.

january161992 03-02-2017 01:05 PM

my learned bad habit of drinking was replaced by a new learned good habit of aa meetings

Not going well. I just can't seem to do anything right. I hide the rum in the kitchen and make excuses to go in and sneak a sip. My husband has no idea I'm back to where I was last summer.

Dee74 03-03-2017 03:38 AM

Maybe telling him could be a way to break the cycle and get you some help?

I second this idea.

Willadoit 03-03-2017 03:52 AM

It might be a good idea telling your husband. When I lived with my now ex-partner and hid my drink, and sneakily drank, it was almost as if I was hiding the full extent of my drinking from myself, as well as him. Since living on my own, I still used to put the bottle back hidden in the cupboard (who was I hiding it from?) Since I stopped doing that, very recently, it seemed the full extent of my drinking actually dawned on me for the first time, made it real to me and that I had to do something, anything to stop it.

Making plans is good....

But CHOICE and ACTION are better.

Frankly, the only real PLAN you need (this is an oversimplification, but true) is the PLAN to CHOOSE sobriety every day and the PLAN to ACT in support of that choice every moment.

I found that the real missing ingredient for me when I was unable to stop - was CHOICE. It was easy to have a plan. It was easy to say "I'm going to....." But it was a very different moment when I finally, really CHOSE Sobriety.

PhoenixJ 03-03-2017 04:48 AM

DO NOT DRINK- firstly. Then see a doctor about health- depression, dehydration, diet imbalances. Post here lots- read, share, learn, grow. Journal. Go to meetings- AA/SMART? See a counsellor. Work out a sobriety plan- do not just hope will power works- does not for most (including me).
Do stuff differently. Declutter your personal living space. Change can help you feel better. Post.

:grouphug:
Sometimes those who love us most can't help us because they just want us to be happy. I can't say if that is the case with your husband, but you really need to want a sober lifestyle for yourself. I try to keep a journal of my slips so when history begins repeating itself at least there is the opportunity to look back and remind myself why staying sober is better than getting sober.

Good luck and keep reading / posting!!

RetiredGuy 03-03-2017 06:16 AM

Instead of hiding the rum, why not put it in the trash!!

milly4me 03-03-2017 06:46 AM

Yeah, throw the rum away. Sometimes the only plan you really need is the plan to NOT DRINK TODAY. And you need that plan every day.
