Went to dinner out with the family. I now usually order a ginger beer and lime or a cranberry with soda water. I had a cranberry/soda while waiting for our table. Once we were seated, the new waiter asked if we needed new drinks and I indicated for another cranberry and soda.

Somewhere the order got lost in translation and she brought back a cranberry/vodka/soda water. I squeezed the lime in and took a fist sip and ....hello! My wife immediately saw the look on my face and asked what is wrong. Told her about the drink and she was like "are you ok!"

Yes, i am fine. slid the drink to the edge of the table. When the waiter asked if did not like the drink I told her it has vodka in it an I don't drink alcohol. She was mortified and apologetic. No worries I said just need to swap it out for the unleaded version. It was interesting in how much I did not like the taste of that sip.

Anyone else had that happen to them?

My wife had poured some of her beer into a tea bottle .
If one is going to drink unleaded -- must always be on gard.

I sometimes have dreams where it happens to me, and it's horrifying, but it never has in real life. Thank goodness. Glad you reacted in a cool manner - not a real big deal, just calmly move on.

I used to think I liked the taste of my favorite drink. I took a sip of a drink over the holidays and alcohol really does taste terrible.

Sounds like you handled it well. These things happen. It hasn't happened to me yet, although I hope that if it did, I would handle it as well as you did!

I was given the same drink years ago in Vegas. But I could tell by looking at it that it was mixed with something as the cranberry was very pale so to speak.

I had a weird experience while touring a friends vodka distillery while sober though. They use this extremely purified water...super clean. He gave me a sip and I could have sworn it was vodka. I don't know why, because it wasn't, for sure. It was so cold and 'clean' tasting....I completely freaked inside and had a mini panic attack. Took me several minutes to calm down. Weird. Power of suggestion. And what water actually should taste like....nothing.

in it.

For me to remain successful in recovery
and sobriety, being honest with myself,
to not play with fire, walk on slippery slops,
non alcoholic written on items still contain
traces of alcohol in them and will remain
knowledgeable that they exist and
stay clear of those temptations.

Injesting small amounts of alcohol is
absolutely not worth putting my recovery/sobriety
and life in jeopardy.

Just my thoughts to share.

Part of a leadup to a relapse for me was getting sick and taking medication that contained ethanol as a solution. I didn't realise till I was already sliding towards relapse and ruin. In my latest stretch of sobriety I was shocked to find a mouthwash I was using had alcohol in it. I quickly looked for and found a non alcohol version.

I had some beer cheese soup about four months into sobriety. It wasn't an accident - I ate it because I love cheese, and I love soup, and I loved beer, and I didn't think since it was cooked in the soup that it would serve nearly the same purpose as a drink. Now after reading about the topic in depth on SR, I realize that alcohol can still have an effect even if cooked. I honestly didn't know - now that I know better, I'll do better

Funny, I've had similar things happen, but only in dreams. In early sobriety it was an anxiety kind of thing, like I would accidently drink some liquor and then not be able to stop. At some point the dreams changed and I would take a sip and push it away, not wanting more. I've had at least a dozen dreams like this, but it has been months. I'm feeling like it's not an issue. I really just don't want to drink anymore. Acid dreams are another story, though. They're triggering in their own way. There's clearly still a part of me that wants to get blazing high, but I plan to settle for trippy dreams.
