is there ever anyone in the chat rooms

it says there are 160,000 members, seems like the chat rooms would be overflowing, but so far i haven't seen anyone in there. Anyone know of any way to permanently avoid the black blinking notification thing in the upper right corner if the page?
Any way at all, incliding bypassing everything and going straight to the chat room, or excluding myself from participating in the forums, or excluding myself from getting any private messages or whatever it takes. the thing totally stresses me out.
Same thing with these smilies things c011:
:: ::
hmm, the thing even sent me back, saying I couldn't include them all, only 5. Isn't there a way it could allow me to only use 0 and everyone else too?
I can/have to keep them scrolled down below the screen. I just hate blinking moving things. Any way to have them turned off in other people's messages? Any preferences to have them not show while I'm sitting here typing? There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that I'm ever going to want to use one, or that I will ever, ever appreciate when someone else does. On a rare occasion a simple typed smiley, non-blinking, non-moving.
I live in a quiet place in the country. I like a serene environment. I realize there is a risk of winding up somewhat handicapped from living in a place like this. I do have PTSD from living in oakland for 20 years with other people's stereos. I have only ever met few people who could understand why i would be uncomfortable with hearing neighbor's music in my own living room at jackhammer volume. Who needs to be able to hold an ordinary quiet undisturbed conversation in their own house? Doesn't everyone love hiphop anyway?
So anyway, back to chat, is there something I'm not doing right?
Just looking to see if there isn't some way to find a place on this site to just settle down, and not be bombarded by all sorts of things I don't want.
what is tags and trackback? it says so below this typing area.
thank you thank you for allowing me to not choose an icon for my message

I just found this below:
'Smilies' are small graphical images that can be used to convey an emotion or feeling. If you have used email or internet chat, you are likely familiar with the smilie concept. Certain standard strings are automatically converted into smilies. Try twisting your head on one side if you do not 'get' smilies; using a bit of imagination should reveal a face of some description.

If you want to disable smilies in a post that you make, you can select the 'Disable Smilies' option when posting. This is particularly useful if you are posting program code and you do not want converted to a smilie face!

so how do I DO it?

You should be able to click this:

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...do=editoptions

If not, it is in "User CP", "Edit Options" above this page in the colored bar.

If you disable messaging that blinking thing in the top right will disappear and if you disallow "images" and if you disallow viewing Avatars and Signatures (just uncheck those boxes in the Thread Display Options on that link,) you should eliminate all moving images. Smileys/emoticons are posted as images.

Even if you disable messaging, the admins will still be able to message you - but they won't usually unless there is some problem.

Welcome to SR lifeJ. Are you here seeking help with a drinking issue?

I just tried to block emoticons by disallowing images, and it didn't work. Oh, well.

Accept the things I cannot change, and all that.

I don't like hiphop either! It's the barking dogs around here that make me crazy though.

Hi Life

We spoke by PM. Sorry you're not comfortable.

If you use quick reply you won't see the smiles below your post.

The 'blinking light' is to show you have unread PMs and to stop it make sure you read all your PMs.

You haven't really mentioned why you're here?

If you need support for your recovery, this is a great place to be...

D

I would start by hanging around and keep coming back.

We welcome your questions and are glad you're here with us.
