2/7 was my day #1
I've wanted/needed to stop drinking for some time now. I've been drinking regularly and heavily for about the past 12 years. I'm a typical, functioning alcoholic with a great job and family. Luckily nothing too bad has happened, but I'm really just sick of the mental and emotional drain alcohol has on me. It's effecting my work and personal lives due to brain fog, lack of concentration and the basic feeling like crap in the morning. I find remembering things to be increasingly difficult and I just want to be better. I made yesterday, 2/7, my first day and waking up today already feels so much better. I know this will be a journey I'll struggle with, but it's one I'm committed to succeeding on. I'm a marathon and ultra marathon runner and the thought of waking up and running without a hangover is extremely appealing to me! Here's to a better life (emotionally and physically) and to sticking with sobriety.
I love this site and the support I've seen for others on here. I've spent about a month lurking and finally decided to make my sobriety official. Let's do this!

It feels so good to quit, yes? I loved what you said about the joy of working out without a hangover. Think about how marvelous that will be.
Glad that you are with us, and there will be lots of support for you as you move forward on this journey. Yes, you can DO this!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have noticed quite a few newcomers here who start their posts with 'nothing too bad has happened so far'..and then list a pile of things that non-drinkers would be scratching their heads at.
That's not a personal dig at all. It is just an observation that our dependence of alcohol blinds us I think to the real and really quite nasty harm it is already doing by the time we recognise it is a problem for us.
Anyway apologies for the lecture. Glad to have you aboard!

Captain,
Welcome.
Once you get really clean...maybe 6 months....I bet your marathon performance will improve dramatically.
About 1 month to detox and 6 months to heal up. Unfortunately....the crave is forever. I am still seeing improvement at 21 months clean.
My mental state went from withdrawal to detox to hellish mental suffering to uncomfortable to normal.
Now it goes from normal up to moderate discomfort at the max. Hopefully it will get even better.
It has gotten easier as my sober days add up.
I look at booze as a poison now.
I see drinkers as addicts in denial.
I believe booze alters the mind for a long time after ingestion.
Mind altering equals brain damage.
No thanks.
Thanks.

Welcome, CaptainNinja!
This is a great place to come for support! I've just got a little over a month of sobriety in and already I'm reaping the benefits and you will too! The first week or so was the toughest, but push through it because it really gets better with every day!! So glad you decided to post!
