Unhappy Faulty SCRAM bracelets

Hi everyone.....my son has been wearing a scram bracelet and last week his reading came back as showing a violation during the hours of 6.30am and 7pm on a monday. These are the hours he is at work and as he uses heavy machinery, he would lose his job if he so much as looked at a drink!! He swears he hasnt tampered with it and we are worried sick that this is going to have serious consequences for him. Are these things tamper proof and has anyone else experienced a similar situation.

those bracelets use transdermal testing so it could be it picked up something from the fumes/ chemicals that come with heavy equipment operation.

Hi luluhart, I should preface by saying that i have no experience of them myself.

SCRAM bracelets are definitly not foolproof as they do not just detect ethyl alcohol - the type we drink. They also detect:-

Methanol - a type of alcohol found in fuels for engines (perhaps the most likely culprit if your son works with heavy machinery)

Isopropyl - this is used in various cleaning agents

Cetyl alcohol - sometimes found in hand and body wash/ lotions

It is CLAIMED that there is a different take up pattern between these different alcohols and the type we drink so maybe this will show up as such in your son's case.

I believe the tests are every 30 minutes so i would have thought that any violation would be more specific than between 6.30am and 7.00pm.

If you believe your son is telling the truth it is definitely worth contesting although i do not know how you go about it

Good luck to your son
