New here, just want to get sober

Hi everyone I am new here. I have been drinking on and off for the past five years to self medicate, I struggle with anxiety and depression. I can be sober for two - three weeks and then will have a huge binge and often do foolish things or become agressive. I have a lovely home and could have a good life if I wanted it, but I keep self destructing, Im sick of the shame, the guilt and embarrassment. Not being able to remember things clearly. I dont want to do it to myself anymore.

Welcome to Sober Recovery, Micah87. In the search for sobriety, this is a good place to begin. It helps to start with a plan. AA? Counseling? What one thing can you do today to remain sober?

Welcome. Wanting to be sober is the first step.

The second step is figuring out how you are going to support that decision and remain sober through the tough times ahead.

Welcome to SR, you're already heading in the right direction by making this post. Like the others have said, making a sobriety plan is essential.

Thankyou all. I am on a waiting list for counselling. Ive got an appointment with gp tomorrow to get some help maybe medication for anxiety. I need to remember how badly it feels the day after drinking, and how happy and productive I am between binges. I always think I have it under control but I dont.

Good luck to you! This place is a great resource. It has really helped me to know that I am not alone in this and neither are you..

For me I try to think about how drinking usually keeps me from the "good" and pulls me towards the "not so good". (Exhaustion, irritability, laziness, financial wastefulness, etc etc)

Welcome to SR, MICAH87. Recovery is a better way of life.

Hope you'll join us in the Class of November 2016 thread found on this same forum. It's a great way to learn from and help others who are newly sober.

Welcome and good first step, I am also new and the support is amazing, I always thought my particular relationship with alcohol was somehow unique - it isn't in the slightest and that helps a great deal

Thanks so much. It can be so isolating feeling like this, feeling shame all the time, feeling like your the only person who isn't 'normal' its great to have support from people who are going through the same things. lets get our lives back on track! :-)

The 'not normal' thing is a massive thing for me and is what causes that horrible black mood shame, because the 'normal' word is what I use to make myself feel worse I think. It's not 'normal' to be able to drink a litre and a half of spirits in a 5 hour sitting, it's not 'normal' to message people and not know what you've said but being too ashamed to read back, it's not 'normal' to take yourself to bed to pass out but leave the fire on, the TV on and candles lit.

'Normal' is still subjective, but the best thing about us is that we have a problem and are trying to fix it. Keep hope :-)

Welcome Micah! Of course it's in you to do this - and it really helps to talk things over here. I'm glad you're seeking counseling too. We are with you.
