My doctor gave me this poem. It was written by another doctor, and I thought it was really beautiful and wanted to share it.....

Disabled


Set adrift.
Toward unseen shores.
The insincere,
"You look great,"
Echoes across the gulf.
Searching eyes,
Whispers of truth.
"I heard she's
Had a rough year."

Don't tell me
You envy
My afternoon naps,
Picturing
Book and cat at your side,
Perfectly placed rays of sunlight.
I can't pull off dinner
With a full night's sleep.

Don't say
You wish you
Could drop weight
Without trying.
I wage costly battles
On mountains of food,
Losing again.
Clothes hang
From my slight frame,
Sails billowing in the wind.

Spare me
This admiration
Of my bravery,
The way I face
Illness.
I'd run the other way
If only I could.
These days
I can hardly walk round
This small island
I inhabit.

Please don't
Say again
You'd like to be
On disability.
Your imagined world of leisure
Ever distant from my shore.
Long - forgotten trade routes
Between us
Disappeared.
Not likely you would barter
Your worst day
For my best.
