A tale of two alcoholics
I was in detox in 2013. I had been there a couple of days and in walks a nice-looking younger guy. Great personality. The palms of his hands were literally peeling off due to vitamin deficiency. We became friends and we kept in touch over the years. We went to AA together and got our first white chip together.
I went to see him today in the ICU. He was admitted for pancreatitis and liver failure. In the years since I have seen him, he has been in jail, had his teeth knocked out in a drunken brawl, and currently has a warrant out for his arrest.
He is 34 years old. He is a good guy. Alcohol has all but killed him.
I work at the hospital where he is admitted.
I have a great job. He is not doing well.
That could be me.
My heart is heavy right now. He has three little boys.
Things could go either way, folks. Make good decisions.

Thanks for sharing this, Ali. It's absolutely heartbreaking, but also incredibly impactful. This COULD be any one of us, and we should never forget that.
Sobriety is truly a gift. I hope your friend is able to recover and regain his health.

I would like to talk with him for hours about abusing.
Of what he's learned, and would change.
What do you think where the main differences between your choices?
Oh, why the MI at 34; drugs?
Thanks for sharing

That could be me as well...I am so sorry about your friend.
I see it everywhere and I am reminded that that could be me and I am empathetic to them as well as scared of them...I think I am scared of them because it is too close and it could be me.
