Grinding it out

Howdy folks. Newbie here. This is my 29th day of sobriety, and it's driving me nuts. I want a drink every minute of the day and night.
I spent 17 days in two hospitals because alcohol had trashed all parts of my body. I've been home for the past 12 days, and that makes it even harder not to drink. I came here because AA isn't for me.

I will refrain from posting any more personal details about myself until I get a feel for the forum. I would like some energy and positive words, though.

Hi WavyGravy,

Welcome to SR! Congratulations on getting through that first month of sobriety!

You will find lots of support on here, and many different paths to recovery. Dee has a great link and I am sure he will be around to post it soon.

You should join the October 2016 thread, it helps having others at the same point in recovery as you. Also, there is a 24 hour thread where you can commit to being sober for the next 24 hours.

In the beginning I planned out every moment of the time that o normally spent drinking. I exercised, read, took my kids to the park or to activities, did anything to pass the time. I have just about ten months sober now and I feel so much better physically and mentally.

I promise it gets easier!

Welcome!

I'm sorry you're struggling right now, but things will get better. Be proud of how far you've come.

One thing I would ask you is have you made any changes in your life besides stopping drinking? Recovery is about much more than 'not drinking'. We need to deal with the underlying issues and we need to find healthy ways to live, enjoy life and deal with ups and downs.

I'll work on that, Anna. At this point, I'm just trying to stay sober and smoking more cigarettes. Part of that is that I have very limited mobility right now. I physically cannot do what I want . Thanks.

Love your name, Wavy.

I'm very glad you found us. When I first came here I didn't have any expectations - but I knew I couldn't keep going it alone. Being able to talk about my situation with those who understood made all the difference to me. The encouragement I find here each day helps me stay strong. I hope you'll stay. Congratulations on your 29 sober days.

Try to find support, brother. Not sure why AA "isn't for you".. it's helped many in your situation. Often our addictive thinking tells us that. I was no different. This board also helps a lot, but nothing beats face to face when the cravings are strong like yours.

Hi wavy,

I feel like the meds make the crave drag out.

I crave, but it seems like they are not that horrible.

Seems like folks that use meds to detox struggle hard to stay clean.
At 29 days I felt like a lunatic...if that makes you feel any better.

I didn't discover SR until 80 days...I was hunting for answers to why I was freaking out while clean.

Consider weening off the meds asap.

Dealing w life pure and clean is challenging but feels right.

I am assuming you are on some meds since you did a supervised detox.

If I am mistaken, please except my apology.

Thanks for posting.

I was mostly housebound when I found SR. This place really helped.
Welcome aboard WG

Congrats WG!

Say, how about sometimes thinking of a quick list of reasons to change...

Then think happy thoughts. . . Maybe of some good natural things you can do now.

Then think further how to achieve them. . . becoming even 'happier'

Further and further away from the past .

If you've decided to change, that's it.

Why torture yourself?

Free Peace

Hi Wavygravy. Love the name Glad you are out of the hospital - don't like it there.

My first 3 years of sobriety was exclusively here on SR for support and then I added in going to AA meetings as I needed the face-to-face reality of being with a group of people who were like me. SR is awesome! Glad you found it!

Welcome Wavygravy! Hope you are doing ok today, how are you?
I agree with other posters, you can't sit there and expect your cravings to go away. I know you are fairly limited in movement, but are you interested in stuff like video games, books, netflix, etc? I find those types of things help me when I'm stuck at home.

Do you have any friends or family you could call or spend some time with? Interaction always seems to help me too.
Little by little it will get easier. Hang in there, and put little bits of effort every day in your sobriety.
