The Small Stuff Weekender Thread 06-09 October 2016 http://www.wilsoninfo.com/welcome/welcomeclipart16.gif To The Weekender Thread for 06-09 October 2016 Hi and welcome to the Weekender Thread! This is a place where anyone and everyone can come for support - especially over the weekend - but also right through the coming week as well. All you have to do to join is post - we'd love to see you come aboard :) http://nittanyquillonline.com/store/images/123.jpg It's been one of those weeks - in the latest chapter of 'me versus technology' my laptop won't turn on unless I hit the power button a million times, and my vacuum cleaner over heated and died when the home help was here. I'm also battling this weird seasonal thing I get with a persistent headache and low grade fever that seems to come and go at will for a week or three. In times gone by, I would have been drunk as a lord by now...I would have ingested the money for a new vacuum cleaner and probably broken the laptop in a rage. Probably made myself sicker too. Nowadays, it's all just small stuff - annoying and frustrating maybe - but small stuff. I've ordered a new vaccuum, at least the laptop still works, and my whatever this seasonal malaise is will disappear like it always does. Illusions is one of my favourite books by Richard Bach. It's actually the first place I read 'don't sweat the small stuff'. I recommend it to anybody if you can find a copy. He also writes: “There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts.” ― Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah I struggled with that for a long time (still not sure I seek problems but I can take good from them, lol). The gift of my problems this week was to remind me of the good things in my life...and to remind me that others in this world are *really* suffering. Whatever I can do to help them is effort better served than me feeling sorry for myself. More rambling, I know, but that's where my head's at today - have a great sober weekend ahead guys! :grouphug: D |
Shotgun! |
Great post Dee! I try hard not to stress about the small things, I even have a few of the Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at... Books, one of which I keep in my office! I hope you are feeling 100% soon again. Lots of good stuff to think about in your post for all of us wherever we happen to be in our recovery journey. I know that no matter what issue I have had to deal with over the past nine months it has been much easier to do sober. Welcome to all Newcomers, this is a great thread to help you stay sober this weekend! |
Vice-shotgun! |
What comes after vice-shotgun? Assistant to the vice-shotgun? Great post. There's some discussion about 'where we would have ended up' if we hadn't started drinking/drank less/would still be drinking. Okay, no one really discusses the latter. Drinking is a persistent problem, so it's difficult to notice the gifts. But once you sober up - you realise that after the fog clears away, you're left with very specific and excellent 'problem solving skills'. But the trick is to stay sober long enough to realise this. I'm a big worrier, always have been. Even though I tell myself that worrying is a waste of my fantasy, I still can't seem to shake it. Or, at least I thought I didn't. Even though in very early recovery, I feel a lot calmer. Seems that sobriety works especially well as a remedy against 'sweating the small stuff'. Great topic for a weekender! |
Thrice-shotgun? Great OP Dee! IN |

Funny about "laptop rage", Dee. I've been considering buying a broken one just so I can smash it. Much frustration lately. |
Good morning!! I am excited for a sober weekend but I am going back to bed. Thanks Dee for the new thread! Great reminder. Zanna- great attitude and congratulations on the double digits. :) |
I'm in. And I have yet to see you ramble, Dee! :) |

I'm in! Excellent OP, Dee. I have found I am getting much better at not sweating the small stuff in sobriety. I used to be so full of anxiety, and any little thing could send me over the edge emotionally. I'm so much calmer now. I can see that there's a solution for everything, and that I'm more likely to find it if I stay calm and think things through. This has been one of the bigger gifts of sobriety so far for me. |
I'm in! |
I'm in--looking forward to a four-day weekend due to work holiday :fest30: I have also let go sweating the small stuff most of the time. Even the larger stuff is a blip on the radar compared to when I drank. "Just do the next right thing" has been some of the most useful advice I have gleaned here on SR. It really works. |
