New to sober recovery

Hi all,

This is my second go at sobriety. I am 21 years old I was sober about 28 days a few weeks ago and was going to AA almost daily and had a sponsor, but I just got tired of it and stopped going and eventually drank.

Low and behold, I am back to my previous drinking habits of binge drinking on the weekends. I am reckless and spend too much money. I usually spend most of my Sunday's in bed all day waiting for the hangover to subside.

I am tired of my alcoholism and want to stop it once and for all. Alcohol has done nothing good for me except strain relationships with people and caused me to gain weight.

I know I am more than my alcoholism.
Would love any beginner advice!

Hi and welcome anco :)

Are you still tired of AA or are they worth a second look?

I think whatever you can do for your recovery is a good thing - you'll definitely get back the effort you put in :)

you'll find a lot of support here too :)

Hello and Welcome. You've come to an amazing place for support and encouragement. Make "NOT Drinking" your #1 priority. Sounds simple.... I know it's not.

You're young and this decision will be one of the best ones you've ever made. I wish I quit when I was your age. You have sooo much life ahead of you not to waste.

Wishing you the best tonight as you go forward.

Good to meet you, anco22! We're here to help.

I admire you. At 21 I knew I didn't drink like others. Once that first drink hit me there was no telling what would happen. I didn't stop back then though. Decades later I found myself drinking every day - with a ruined life. This won't happen to you anco. Great to have you with us.

Welcome Anco. I tried AA too and it works for many although when I read about Rational Recovery AVRT it jumped out at me and I thought -wow I can relate to this! Maybe give it a read.

I'm still working on sobering up, but for me insomnia has been one of the main issues. One of the ways to combat insomnia is to just to do a lot of exercising. This might also be helpful if you want to shed a few pounds, with the added benefit of warding off the sleeping issues a lot of us face. Do you have access to a gym? It might be easier to build friendships that don't revolve around drinking at a gym.

Welcome Anco!

It's great that you are facing your issue now. I drank daily for decades and regret all the time in my life I wasted drinking. SR is a great source of support.

You can do this!

I would advise nipping this issue in the bud and get it out of your life now or you may find yourself making an identical post when your 41 instead of 21. Wish you the best.

Tough love at it's finest- I appreciate your words. Sometimes I feel like the only way for me to truly learn is via tough love.
best,
anna

At a certain point you might experience diminished returns with too much tough love. Recovery is a hard enough without internally tyrannizing ourselves. It's true you'll find a bit of tough love here, but you'll also find a lot of kind support I hope.

Btw sorry to jump in without welcoming you here. Great to have ya. I hope this site can help you succeed.
