A fun and light post today... where did you come up with your username?
I grew up in NJ and have fond memories of catching lightening bugs in the yard on summer evenings. Lightening bugs are cute, like lady bugs or butterflies.
I live in Florida now and we have hideous bugs the size of small dogs and they aren't cute at all. They are worthy of death by Aquanet - and yes, hairspray works if you spray them long enough. And then slam them with the can.
So what about you? What is behind your name?

I got sober in aa. my Hg had 5 other toms. it would get a lil confusing saying,"hey,tom."
someone noticed I was the youngest, so my name there turned into "youngtom."
for some mysterious reason, when I turned 40, that 'young" disappeared even though there were still lots of toms.
so I started callin myself tomsteve, mainly because theres already billybob's, jimbob's, s,billyray's, bobbyjoe's..........

I actually lived in Florida for about 4yrs LB. Your story made me laugh.
When I decided to use this name I wasn't quite able to appreciate the little things like lady bugs, butterflies and so many other things I've looked past the last 12yrs of my life. The name came about because so many of my friends couldn't accept the fact that I wasn't drinking. The REALITY of me being "sober" was in their face whether they chose to except it or not. Most of them all do now but there are still those few who can't.

Hippos fascinated me for a while. I still enjoy watching them on YouTube and reading about them.
At first, they struck me as cute and funny-looking. Later on, after reading about them, I was amazed at how aggressive and territorial they can be, and how deadly they are for humans. I was taken aback by this new info.
Also, I see them metaphorically in ways ... for instance, in recovery, we stop drinking and yet at first, we have no idea how much damage we've done to ourselves, no idea the gravity of the situation until we progress over time, and begin to see clearly. We see the beastly nature of alcoholism, the danger, and the narrow death escapes.
It's a powerful creature. We are powerful creatures. And alcoholism had us in its grips for a while.
'Soberpotamus' as a compound word is like one of the dinosaurs -- a tyrannosaurus, a brontosaurus, etc. -- sounds similar, and is a unique animal -- me sober but also me as a person who drank -- encompassing my past and my present, me as someone who is overcoming alcoholism, the power that alcohol held over me, as well as my power to be free of it all.

because im sober last year i was able to complete one of my bucket list items which was to drive around the whole country
35 states, 9200 miles in 11 days
i saw some of those giant bugs in your state amazing
oh yea my user name is the most important thing in my life

If you travel up to the top of the first mountain, turn left down a long dirt country road, next to the last group of mailboxes you will find Bob and wife, goats, chickens, dogs, cats and parakeets.
