Cool I really want a drink...but I will not

Hold me accountable. I must not give in, but I would really like a glass of red wine with my steak...and I know one would not be enough and there is never a number that would be "enough"...
Uggh...why is this so hard for me. I wish I could be "normal"...

No wine tonight, there's too much at steak! That's a bad year anyway.

play the tape through - remember where that glass of wine takes you...all the embarrassment, the sickness, the lies, the self loathing.

You don't need that

Don't need wine to enjoy that steak. Have a nice desert instead

Like Dee said, play the tape through! Also, pro tip: I always pick up a fancy Italian soda for my steak. My personal favorite is Whole Foods' Blood Orange. It has a nice tang to it and makes me look forward to drinking something with a nice dinner.

Don't drink. It will take you where you don't want to go.

Just say No. It gets easier in time, truly.

Play the tape forward to what happens. You dont want or need any of that crap.

Maybe have an extravagant dessert instead.

So glad you came here and posted, the advice about playing the tape through is very wise. Enjoy the steak, skip the wine, and you will wake up feeling great tomorrow!

You've got this:-)

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
I knew I would gain support here.
I made it through. I wasn't happy about it, but I'm happy now.
Yes, this glass of wine would have led to another year or so of awful, terrible, decisions and children that would suffer from their non-involved Mother... Nope, not gonna do it! I've already lost too much time to this beast...
Thanks so much for talking me off the ledge. I am so appreciative.

OK, here it goes.......wine does not make steak taste better. The steak will taste like a steak. The wine satisfies your mind/brain's need for alcohol. Then you feel good for 15-20 minutes...but you never changed the taste of the steak.

So, the steak is an excuse to drink.

Totally agree. Steak is a trigger, or "excuse" if that is the language you prefer. Never said the steak would taste better...just wanted a glass of wine to go with the steak because that was the "norm"...

Dunno about you, but I usually had a couple of glasses before I ever sat down to that steak and usually couldn't taste much anyway...couldn't have told the difference between steak and roadkill armadillo half the time.

So not worth it.

The one I struggled with was the glass of Chianti with my spaghetti bolognese at the local Italian. Realised after lots of struggles was to order something different for a while so the association was not there until eventually I could order my favourite together with soda water.... It's tough to begin with but it does get easier. 😏

The steak sounds delicious. I can understand wanting the wine, but its better left behind.
