See How it Feels

Yesterday, I was talking with an acquaintance from school who is struggling with alcohol. She said that she starts every day planning to not drink, and early afternoon, she gets nervous about what will happen if she doesn't drink. So I asked her, "Well, what will happen?" She admitted that she didn't know, and she had never had physical withdrawal, so it is simply a compulsion. I asked her if she had drank yet, and she said that she hadn't. Then I asked her if she was willing to try to see what would happen and how it would feel to just not have that drink when the compulsion arrives. And I told her, "If you can't take it, then you can't take it. But if you don't try it, you don't know if that fear is based on reality or not."

Well, I got an email from her this morning saying that she now officially has one sober day.

It's ok to be uncomfortable.

I might say that it's necessary in order to grow.

No one ever died from fear or discomfort, though I imagine that many never got very far by trying to avoid them.

There is rarely a new birth without blood and screaming.
