SoberRecovery is a marvel. It clearly works. In every way. The site obviously was designed by the Christopher Wren of web designers. The layout, accessibility, interaction, forums (fora?), groups, sub-groups, user-friendliness and speed are all top notch.
With almost 160 000 members the site works for addicts. There are probably 160 000 reasons why it works. I think I found one in Sarah Hepola's book "Blackout": page 155: "Maybe it's easier to be our best selves with strangers. People we'll never know long enough to let down"
The book, by the way, I cannot recommend too highly. Extremely funny and hard hitting to the bone without skipping a beat. Both the drunk and recovery parts.
Perhaps Sarah Hepola will be my higher power.
