Cooking with Wine?

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, and also sorry if it seems like a stupid question! Lol

So I'm on Day 3 of being sober, and just had a dish of Shrimp and Grits. Now this dish has cooking wine in it, and I'm wondering was that ok? I didn't taste it, but I'm just freaking out. Idk.

I decided not to eat any food I knew had been cooked in alcohol.

It's hard enough to stay sober in the early days IMO without perhaps triggering ourselves.

It doesn't burn off as much people think

That is what I figured. I had no idea until I was half way through my meal and someone mentioned it.

Thank you for all the info! Very informative. I won't count it as drinking for my own peace of mind ha.

Good question.... And thanks Dee. That's very interesting and something I did not know. It's also surprising to me.

I wouldn't count count it either. It does sound like a good idea to use extreme caution though in light of this.

In the end our recovery is ours and ours alone. Now that you have the info I think would be best to abstain from drinking anything cooked with alcohol because it could end up being a downward trigger but this was not intentional or with the proper knowledge.

Continue to work on your recovery- sometimes the quality of our recovery is more important then the quantity of our sobriety.

Very true. Thanks so much for the info and insight guys. I feel much better now. I was starting to beat myself up over it. But I know that'll only give myself a reason to give up. And I can't let that happen.

You guys are the best! Hope all are well tonight.
:thanks

I would definitely not beat yourself up over it.
Intent is everything - you had no intent to drink...it's all good. :)

Whether or not it has alcohol in it, if we think it does then we might be triggered by the mere possibility. That is why I don't believe in drinking non-alcoholic beer or drinking a virgin Pina Colada with a pretty umbrella. Our addictive brain fixates on the what if and can set off a trigger that leads to a craving that leads to a drink.

cranberry juice can be a good substitute and you can buy non-alcoholic cooking wine .
white grape juice , lemon juice are ok .

Alcohol makes me ill now if it's an ingredient , It also overpowers the dish and makes it inedible ..
Our tastes and flavours change a bit with sobriety in my experience ..

Bestwishes, m
