And it's so hard to resist doing it, as it brings an almost immediate relief from the shame and guilt. But it's not sustainable, so it's got to go.

we do need relief from the shame and guilt. and "immediate" is tempting.
but "immediate" is part of the drinking pattern, too, the "need" for the drink. the need for "right now!" relief.
yes, sitting with discomfort is doable, i've found, and triggers require no action as such.
but what you're saying implies , too, the need for a long-term relief, which i've found by other ways to address shame, guilt, past wrongs, and then finding a way to live that minimizes new guilt and shame.
