Reason for leaving on a job application

I am currently 108 days sober and had to leave my job of almost 5 years. I left on good terms because I was able to tell my boss (who's sober for over 30 years now) that the stress and situational circumstances were becoming to much for me and that I would relapse if I stayed. He was understanding and cool about it, but what suggestions or ideas do you have for finding a new job and answering the tricky question of "Reason for leaving"? Thank you for your help in this.

Do you have a different path in mind, or are you just trying to get a J-O-B?

Just say you wanted to explore new opportunities. Or take a new career path. Your coversation with your boss need only be known by you two.

Yeah, it sounds like you and your boss worked things out amicably. Lots of people leave a job to look for something different. Good luck with your job search.

So - if I decided to leave marketing (current field) and try for a position in communication or training (an idea Im toying with), I'd tell a prospective employer exactly that.

I think employers don't really care as long as you weren't fired for criminal activity or whatever. Hiring managers in my experience are mostly interested in what you offer to fill their needs within the company - not your past, unless your past contains experience they can leverage.
