Progressive, Chronic and Fatal

Received word today that a lady a group of us were trying to get sober died while detoxing of heart failure. She was only 46 years old, a college graduate, came from a nice family and blended right in with all the other women our age. Before I finally got sober, I use to say to myself "geez, it's just wine, Soberween, calm down. You're making this more than it is." That was definitely my AV speaking to me. We have to be diligent in remembering that that bottle of wine (or whatever your drink of choice is) would love nothing more than to see us dead.

If you've decided to finally change your life for the better and live a life alcohol free, then please contact a doctor before doing so. It really is a matter of life and death. I was just talking to this lady two weeks ago and I would never have dreamed she would died so soon from this disease.

I'm sorry for the loss. Was she being detoxed in a medical facility or under the supervision of a medical professional?

I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for this reminder that our problem isn't just about the negative outward effects. It's what we don't see and know that's going on inside our bodies that's equally important.

She was detoxing in a medical facility, but had decided to go on one "last hurrah" prior to the detox and was literally pounding vodka to the tune of at least a 1/4 a gallon a day. Her heart had become so weakened due to the chronic abuse of her body that she simply could not recover.

I really didn't know her at all other than seeing her at one meeting and one group dinner afterwards so it really isn't my loss. It's more of a cautionary tale I wanted to share to newcomers. I know when I was a newcomer stories like this made me sit up and take notice that I needed get this drinking problem behind me or else something catastrophic was going to happen to me or someone else in my path. I am full of gratitude today that I was able to figure this out.

So sorry to hear that. It's really not a game and things like this make that very clear.
