No, it is the roots of a banyan tree. Banyan trees are tres cool. This particular one is at the Ringling Meseum in Sarasota.

Banyans are figs! But I don't think they bear the same fruit as my faves, ficus carica. I always wanted to have one but I think they need a lot of room.

Is that Ringling Museum related by chance to the circus?

It is! John and Mabel Ringling made their home, Cas d'Zan, in Sarasota. They built their home in the style of the Venetian architecture that they loved.

Sarasota was also the winter home of the circus for many years.

Unfortunately, Mabel only lived in the home for a couple of years after completion. She met a very early death.

John Ringling died a pauper but left his large collection of art to the City of Sarasota. The Art Museum is part of the Ringling estate. There is also a very captivating circus museum. People of all ages love it.

Thanks, SoberLeigh.

That picture perfectly illustrates the description I read as a child, of Lepidoptera wings being "covered in tiny scales, overlapping like the tiles on a house-roof".

Relaxation lasted about 24 after re-arrival in NYC, although I'm still getting intermittent blasts of sun-drench-ed-ness.

As for suntanned, a little red around the schnozz?
