Consider the vision your name creates
Slightly related tangent: I just did the AA thing for my username--first name, last initial--when I joined in July 13. I kind of regret it now as I've had a couple of small anonymity concerns since then because of that. But I hate to change it since I have so many relationships with others here who know me by this name. But I do highly suggest that anyone reading this who is thinking of joining not use their real name in any form. FreeOwl's right--pick something that relates to who you want to be in recovery, not the miserable addict you were.
Good message, FreeOwl, and fun to read people's responses.
When I joined SR, I had a hard time thinking of a screen name. I wanted something that 1) didn't have references to drinking in it and 2) wouldn't be anything recognizable about me for confidentiality purposes.
I got tired of hemming and hawing over it and came up with "Venecia," which can be seen (if you look closely) on an item in my living room, just to get on with it. If I had a do-over, I'd choose something different because the image it evokes is something like this:
But I've been Venecia so long here it's just who I'm going to remain. Some call me Ven and my friend Melina calls me Venny. I kinda like that.

My name came from my favorite Def Leppard song but was appropriate. When I was actively drinking, I felt like I was in the desert. Alone, lost, parched, in need of sustenance. My name, plus my profile picture, was how I pictured myself. A flower in the desert, defying the odds. Life can indeed flourish in a desert and defy the odds.
If I would have named myself when I first sobered up it would have been Puddle-O- Sewage. Thank God I was a few years sober when I discovered SR or I would have been stuck with it forever. Sort of like a tatto once you have it it is there for eternity

I stayed up one night listening to this song over and over while drinking years back. I went through my first serious DTs and it played in my head the next day like it was still on in the living room. My self pity got me nothing but sick.
Signed up and made the name as a reminder of how scary that day was and to never do that to myself again. Found out later that there is another user with the same name (sorry).

Oh man, my name is basically just my name. So much for anonymity. I wished I'd used a cool name like most of you. My street name in Iraq was the Big Sho, I liked that a lot. The Colonel asked me if it was spelled Show or Sho. I never thought of it but I guess when you are a colonel you know such things.

I've shared the meaning of my user name before, it is the title of an Italian song I like. It serves as a reminder to remember what wonderful things there are in the world even when I am feeling down. I almost feel bad reposting this link because I have posted it many times, but it is a good reminder for me today and I hope it will be for someone else viewing here today.
E vero, credetemi è accaduto/ it's true, believe me, it happened
di notte su di un ponte/ one night on a bridge
guardando l'acqua scura/ while i was looking at the dark waters
con la dannata voglia/ feeling the damned impulse
di fare un tuffo giù uh/ to dive into them
D'un tratto qualcuno alle mie spalle/ suddenly someone behind me
forse un angelo/ perchance an angel
vestito da passante/ disguised as a passer-by
mi portò via dicendomi/ took me away saying
Così: Meraviglioso/this: wonderful
ma come non ti accorgi/ can't you see
di quanto il mondo sia/ how the world is
meraviglioso/ wonderful
Meraviglioso/ wonderful
perfino il tuo dolore/ even your sorrow
potrà guarire poi/ could heal someday
meraviglioso/ wonderful
Ma guarda intorno a te/ take a look around you
che doni ti hanno fatto:/ at all the gifts they offered you
ti hanno inventato il mare eh/ they invented the sea for you
Tu dici non ho niente/ you say you have nothing
Ti sembra niente il sole!/ does the sun seem nothing to you
La vita,l'amore/ and what about life, love
meraviglioso/ wonderful
il bene di una donna/ the love of a woman
che ama solo te/ who loves only you
meraviglioso/ wonderful
La luce di un mattino/ the light of the morning
labbraccio di un amico/ the hug of a friend
il viso di un bambino/ the face of a child
meraviglioso/ wonderful
meraviglioso/ wonderful
Ma guarda intorno a te/ take a look around you
che doni ti hanno fatto:/ at all the gifts they offered you

meraviglioso/ wonderful
La notte era finita/ th night was over
e ti sentivo ancora/ and i could still feel you
Sapore della vita/ taste of life
meraviglioso/ wonderful
