Once a Slob, Always..?
I was a total neat freak most of my life, until alcoholism took over. Then I just gave up. Even washing a dish took too much effort. I was either drunk, passed out, or blacked out and stuff just didn't get done. I would dread coming home from work at the end of the day and looking at it all, but I just couldn't bring myself to do anything about it. Same as you ... dishes, trash, bathroom laboratory experiments ... ugh. Once I sobered up, I looked at my surroundings and was totally disgusted. Took awhile to get caught up on the backed up trash and especially the piles of laundry ... omg, the laundry ...
Nowadays, I'm back to my neat freak ways and my house is pretty clean and organized. Never spotless, since I have a messy teenager, but definitely more livable and presentable!

I was a neat freak when my kids were little. Drinking changed that, along with the kids moving out and it's just me and the critters here now. I'm much more 'relaxed' now and not so picky as I used to be.
