Exactly one year ago.
Exactly one year ago today, an innocent fall in the home changed my life forever. Slipped on the stairs to the tile landing, wearing tennis shoes my foot "stuck" like glue. Both legs, specifically my knees, exploded. Could not stand up, thought I was paralyzed initially, crawled on my elbows to my phone and called 911.
2 weeks in the hospital, 2 months in wheelchair, then a walker, then crutches, then a month longer in the braces that had to be worn 24/7 since day one. Surgeon had never seen anything so bad before in his career. Healing time would be 1 year.
Today is one year, and I'm very happy to say I'm not only healed but healthy. I am up to 36-40 minutes of biking and running 4 times per week.
It took this tragedy to end my drinking. Although I drank much less frequently, my binges were worse. After my injury I went around 100 days alcohol free. On two occasions I sat down with the intention of doing some drinking, I had a few sips and I just did not like it. The magic was gone. I did get drunk once last fall out of reactionary anger.
Something has changed, I don't know what really, but I am enjoying being sober more than I ever imagined I could.
I'm convinced I could not have gotten to this point if it weren't for SR. So many smart people, so many points of view, so many different stories, so many levels of success and at times failure. So much perspective. It provided me with the necessary means to take alcohol seriously, and also to see that life can be grand without the bottle. All in all its been pretty cool. Today my wife and I will have a small celebration by having some take out of my choice. Yes, I am a lucky guy.
ps. The job hunting is going great!
