Home detox
Home detox
Hi. Both my GP and Psychiatrist have recommended I have a home detox. This will be on Friday this week until Sunday. I have had all the relevant blood tests. I understand I will then have Antabuse and also an anti craving medication. Has anyone been through this. Thanks
I detoxed at home without a doctors advice and ended up in the ER, so the fact that you've seen a doctor first is a great move. Even with the anti-craving medicine things will still most likely be uncomfortable, there's no way of getting around that unfortunately.
Did your doctor give you any recommendation on diet or anything else?

Hi Chicken, I also home detoxed a couple times with the help from my GP. Before that I went cold turkey a couple times with no help. I would not recommend the latter to anyone!! The meds given to me were the same a detox center would have provided me. I was able to be in the familiar surroundings, much better than a hospital setting. Remember to drink a lot of fluids ie. Gatorade, powerade etc. Also keep track of your blood pressure, I actually bought a small monitor for home use. You should make it through just fine.......hopefully this will be your last time! Best wishes
Eat what tastes good to you....I was told not to be concerned about diet at this time. As long as you keep some nourishment in your body. It is very important to keep your stomach somewhat full to buffer the meds. You can worry about proper diet later. I'm sure the nurse will have some ideas on vitamins you can take as supplements.
In my experience, the withdrawal process makes me very nauseous for the first couple of days. Maintaining an appetite is very difficult, so to keep myself nourished, I had simple bland food that I could just eat a few bites of when I was able. Things like yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, sliced turkey, anything that will get some calories into your system is good. And having a little bit of fat and protein will help keep your blood sugar stabilized as a response to not having your normal influx of sugar from alcohol. That is what worked for me, and I'm sure that the nurse will have lots of good suggestions for you as well.
Just a reminder - share your experience, but please do not make specific recommendations for others about medications or treatments.
