Day 2 - So far so good

Hey All -

Well, this is my 3rd try this year to quit drinking. First time I was able to stay sober for over 60 days. I was focused and was very proud of myself.

So of course I thought I was cured and could have a couple drinks. Nope.....I ended up drinking at least a bottle of wine in an evening. Then weekends would be more of the harder stuff.

Next time was sober for only 6 days, but I wasn't really trying too hard on that short stint. Because I thought, I'd be able to drink only on weekends ... that didn't work.

So for the past 2 weeks .. I have been very anxious and even down right angry at myself. It lead me up to yesterday April 22, 2016... my sober date.

I'm just NOT going to be held hostage to the bottle and being drunk.

I am going to take control and work hard each day.

My thoughts are...

I was happier sober.
My wife and family were happier when I was sober.
I didn't feel ashamed when I was sober.
I was able to focus and really enjoy playing my guitar and singing when I was sober.
I looked better when I was sober.
I felt better when I was sober.
I smelled better when I was sober (well so I'm told).
I slimmed my weight down a little when I was sober.
I stayed awake longer when I was sober.

This is a start..... I need to focus on the positives!

Day 2 here I come!

I'm going to have to do it on my own... Plan is to say sober and not drink.

Thanks for the reply.

Welcome to SR, you will find lots of support here. As you can see by my join date I have been trying to make sobriety stick for a while. I decided that this would be the year I finally made it happen, and have not had any alcohol since New Year's Eve.

There are lots of supports out there, SR is a great one. You may want to join the April class, it helps to have a community of people who are at the same point in their sobriety journey.

Looking forward to seeing you on SR!

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

I'm a part time musician as well. Tonight is a small gig and I am looking forward to staying sober.

One thing is good...
I am not feeling bad or sick.
Just a little edgy.

Hi Easy! It's great to have you with us. Talking things over with those who care really helps.

Welcome to sobriety. It's going to be hard some days, but it gets better. Just hang in there and take care of yourself. Set boundaries with people and make time to relax yourself. Music helps. . I'm a music lover (and singer) myself. Music is therapeutic. I used to think I couldn't sing sober but I found out I can sing even better sober. AV is full of lies. You can do this if I can do this. Take each day at a time, sometimes a minute at a time. If you get a craving come here and talk. This forum (and my faith in God) is what got me sober. I'm not an AA kind of gal (some people are though). I've been sober six months and it is finally starting to feel worth it. Hang in there.

You need a plan to deal with temptation even if you don't use meetings--
I don't either, but planning was really helpful

Good luck!

Ok.. Day 3 started a little rocky. But I am OK. No desire to drink. But I think that is because I feel kinda "funny"... kinda edgy and jittery. But nothing terrible. Just different.

Last night's gig went good... Lots of drinking going on and lots of opportunities for me to drink. Easily. But I didn't! I am proud of that. But had to leave right away afterwards. Hanging around a bunch of drunk folks wasn't my cup of tea (ha).

Ok... Deep breaths ... Time to get on with the day

Awesome job last night. I know how hard that is to do music without alcohol especially considering the scene around you. Ever thought of coffee shop gigs? May be easier than bars, at least for now.

Being a gigging musician adds a few wrinkles iunto the complexity of things.
I had to take some time off before I was absolutely certain that nothing or noone could sway me about not drinking.

All in all I took 12 months off before I gigged again.

If time off is an option for you too, I'd really consider it.
Coffee shop gigs, like secretchord suggested, are pretty good too
