Exhausted
Exhausted
I know recovery is different for everyone - but I'm interested to know how long it took everyone to stop feeling exhausted?
I seem to be sleeping OK - better than I was when I was drinking but not for very long maybe 5/6 hours.
I've only been sober for 2 weeks and I know I have to be patient

As I have gotten older the lingering effects of binges and detox last longer. The initial acute detox is about the same. But generally for about a month my energy is all over the road map, my eyes water, vision is blurry, dehydration, low blood sugar, out of balance electrolytes. I have realized that the low blood sugar issue is the biggest challenge. It causes many of the symptoms people describe when quitting drinking. Low B12, B6 and B1 are very common in alcoholics and can cause a litany of symptoms....low energy being one.
If your symptoms don't improve over the next week or so you could see your dr, get a blood workup checking for the above micro nutrients (I would include magnesium and folic acid) and see what's what. Once you know what your base line is you can safely supplement with the guidance of your dr.

i slept for 16 hrs most weekends for the first 6 weeks but had nights of no sleep too .
4-6 weeks is my experience , but there are no hard and fast rules .
Try to eat well and drink plenty of water . maybe get a check up from the Dr to see if you need to focus on areas of your health ?
keep on

I'm wondering if afternoon fatigue is just the new me. I'm 48 and find myself feeling tired every afternoon for an hour or so. I've been sober several months now.
The alcohol probably shot sugar into me allowing me to press on till bedtime because I was never tired when drinking. I also crave sugar which is new.
The worst of this should pass for you soon and then you just have to get to know your clean body again.

The first month was the hardest for me with sleep. I then changed the medicines I was on and was given a medicine to sleep and that combined with exercise and creating a routine before bed really helped.
When I know I am getting ready to go to bed I turn off the T.V, make some Sleepy Time tea, take my sleeping medicine, read from the current book I am reading, say my prayers turn off the lights and I usually fall asleep fast. Turning off the t.v helped a lot, and not being on any electronic items before bed also did.
It will get better!

I went through a few days at a detox center 4 years ago. I got home and couldn't get out of bed for a week because of the exhaustion. Literally slept all day. I couldn't have gone to the liquor store if I'd even wanted to so there was an upside.
Congrats on two weeks! You will feel better, hang in there.

I am coming up 5 months sober and go through waves of being up and energetic to down and exhausted.....feel all over the place. I am sleeping really well at night and fine when at work but weekend afternoons just want to sleep. I started taking feroglobin to help with tiredness.
It took me a fair few weeks - more than one month and less than four.
I think we underestimate just how much we battered our minds and bodies around - give them a chance to repair and recuperate overforty
