Acknowledgement from my kids

Spent a long time lying to myself about the impact/influence my drinking had on my kids. The topic doesn't come up a lot with them but they are aware I don't drink anymore - they are 7 and 10.

This morning as I drove them to school, out of the blue, the younger said, "Thanks for stopping that drinking beer all the time and instead drinking soda all the time.. So you won't get drink." (I've quasi replaced one vice with another temporarily.)

Punch in the gut, kind of. I paused, and quietly thanked him.

Today is my mother's birthday, the second since she passed away. There have been little signs and reminders of her spirit all day, and I like to think that she had a little something to do with my son's impromptu acknowledgement.

(As an aside my brother picked the location for our dinner tonight, moms favorite restaurant ... Which just happens to be next to a wine and spirits story. Coincidence?)

That's nice. My son's first words were pretty much "daddy beer"

Recovery should first of all be for you, but sounds like you've got at least two great reasons to hang in there when things get tough.

I think it's typical to kind of deny the impact of our drinking on our kids. Mine were teens and I thought they were so involved with their own friends/lives that I hadn't affected them too much. I was incredibly wrong, which I guess I knew on some level, but it is a surprise when something like that comes out.

I think that will give you inspiration to stay sober for a long time.

My girls were teens when I was drinking and they really didn't like it. It took me another couple years before I stopped. They are proud of me for getting sober.

Nothing worse than having your kid write in a school project "things you love doing with your Dad". #1 I love going to the beer store with my Dad..
Ssshhhhhhhame.
