New Job

Hello all,

I haven't written in the forums in a while, although I do come and read the posts. I always get support and hope from sober recovery.

I start a new job on Monday. I'm scared. I've always messed up my jobs in the past. Yes - because of my addiction. I've drank at work in the past, to give me liquid courage. It's like I thought I'd do a better job if I'd had a few, and those few turn out to be way too many. And the end result was bad.

In the past months, I've done so many things sober. And it's been great.
I'm determined to be sober on the job. I'm just praying to God to give me strength.

Why am I so scared and anxious? Scared and anxious is how I have felt before i've picked up the bottle. And that makes me even more anxious.

I'm not obsessing about getting a drink. I just want this feeling to pass. And i want to do it in a safe way. No drinking. Just need support.

Thanks! :)

I think scared and anxious is how moist of us feel in a new job Para. This is a great chance for you to do things differently tho.

If you work through your anxiety and fear - and not try and drink it away - I think you might just be surprised at how soon you feel at home.

Lean on us and whatever other support you might have :)

Congrats on the new job - I know you can kick butt! :)

I went through some major employment changes since I've been sober and I know exactly what you are talking about. I knew how to be a drunk in the working world but I had no idea how to do it sober.

I found I was a much better employee. Harder working, not afraid to stay late, less spaced out, able to make better decisions.

I decided I was just going to do the best that i could do and let God take care of the rest

Congrats on the job. It's perfectly normal to be nervous before starting a new job. And excited. The feelings are similar.

Don't spin it up into pre-drinking anxiety.

Glad to hear you have a new opportunity and especially glad to hear you are sober. I think with the attitude and motivation you describe you will do very well.

Just make sure you see to your sobriety- you identified the trouble, drinking hindered you in the past.

Stay sober and set yourself free.

It's totally normal to feel scared and anxious when starting a new job. I also feel anxious when I am faced with stressful things doing an "old" job or learning a new skill I'm not comfortable with; or dealing with a new boss or a new company, whatever. But it's also exciting in a way, huh? Congrats on your new job and you CAN do it sober.
