The AV
If you can't fully accept you are an alcoholic and can't accept never, ever drinking again, your AV will have a field day.
The AV can only coax. It's you making the decision to drink. If you want to drink, you probably will.
Be strong.

Tell it to read this post as a reminder of why you are going to the meeting in the first place

I too had difficulty believing that I was an alcoholic. Part of me desperately clung to the notion that one day I would be able to drink normally. Of course it didn't happen. No matter how hard I tried to control things the more out of control it became.
One of the great things about being sober is it puts things in context. I can now look back at what my life was like when I was drinking. Alcohol controlled virtually every area of my life. Total mayhem. And I thought I wasn't alcoholic! Thats why its so important to give sobriety a real chance. And also I think why it becomes a lot easier. Just be patient and give things time to settle down. Good luck

It doesn't matter whether or not you are "one of them," what matters is that you try to change habits in your life regarding alcohol. You wouldn't be here posting if what you have been doing in the past was working, so why not try something new? AA might not be the tool you need, but you won't know unless you go and see for yourself.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your posts.
I will be going to AA tomorrow night - I'm almost looking forward to it. Well, not the meeting as such but the sobriety that I hope it engenders. If it seems to be a fit, I'm planning on going twice a week thereafter. :0)

You'll have to find if AA works for you, but I will tell you this: It's impossible to find out if AA or NA works for you if you don't actually do what the experienced members suggest that you do.
Imagine this conversation....
Ed - "How's that sinus Infection? Did the Antibiotics the Dr. gave you work?"
Carl - "Terrible! No, they didn't work at all."
Ed - "Really? That's awful! What happened?"
Carl - "I took one the first morning - I really didn't like the way it made me feel. I got a stomach ache. I took one about three days later, and I actually felt sicker than I did when he gave me them. Then I took one the next week. No good."
Ed - "I thought you were supposed to take them twice a day for ten days straight?"
Carl - "That's what the doctor suggested, but I could tell that they weren't making me feel any better. Besides, who has the time to take them every day? I have a life."
That's good that you recognize that it's just your addiction talking and not your voice.
Hope the meeting goes well--do remember that not all meetings are the same. If for some reason this one doesn't click with you, give another one a try. Even meetings at the same place at different times can have very different feelings to them depending on the subject matter and who's attending.
Stick to your plan and see it through. Your recovery will be better for it.
