First Time

So today is the day.... I actually signed up... It only took me two years. Yet I still feel like a fraud , like maybe I'm just over reacting. Maybe I don't have a problem.... but would I have gone this far if that were true? I'm only 21 but after binging once again two days ago and still feeling the effects tonight as I write this, I feel like I have to do something about this habit before it's too late.

Welcome to SR.

I thought I had a problem when I was 21, but didn't act on it until I was in my 50s.

I'm sure posting and sharing here can help you as it helped me five years ago when I finally go sober.

Welcome aboard PostcardstoNow. If drinking is having a negative impact on you, then by all means congratulations on taking a stand.

For what it is worth, I really wish I had taken a stand when I was your age. It took me another two decades before I took control of my life. Believe me, if you have a problem, the sooner you quit the better off and happier you will be.

Welcome to the community.

Welcome Postcards! We're so glad you're here.

Like MemphisBlues - I knew right away I didn't drink normally. I chose to try & control it for decades, with disastrous results. If I could go back to my early 20's & take a different path, my life would be completely different. Be proud of yourself for taking this step.

Welcome PostcardsToNow

I don;t think many of us end up here by accident If you're drinking is causing you concern this is the right place to be

...and yeah, I told myself I was 'overreacting' many many times.
I wasn't, and I proved that every time I started drinking again.

Let's just say you are overreacting, but stay sober for the rest of your life - isn't it better that you are nipping it in the bud? Many people (myself included) look back and wish they would have stopped when they knew (however many years ago) that it wasn't right. I have yet to hear a person be sober most of their life and wish they would have just kept drinking. No one "regrets" a life of sobriety.

The reason you have a clue that you are on a dangerous path is because of the internet. You are lucky.

When I was 21 there was no internet, so my perception of a drinking problem was people that get DUI etc.

Now you know there are so many other issues associated w drinking.

It is tough to stop at 21, your body is strong and heals fast.

It will take tremendous will power.

Do you have what it takes?

Welcome to SR, PostcardsToNow, and I'm glad you're choosing a better way of life.

Hope you'll join us in the Class of March 2016 thread on this same board. It's a great way to learn from and help others who are also newly sober.

Welcome to the family. You're smart to do something about this now before it spirals out of control.

If only I could go back and get sober at 21. Wow what a different life I would have led. Instead of a wake of broken dreams, broken promises, turmoil, depression, and pain - there would have been love and hope and caring and humility. Sure I never lost a job, didn't get arrested, and only 1 divorce, but I certainly wasn't the best person I could be. I suffered under the 'enjoyment' of alcohol for too many years. I didn't know any other life until I finally told myself I had had enough, found this forum, and found AA.

Congratulations and welcome. I am so pleased when someone young reaches out and finds a sober life. You have so much promise and strength and a world of opportunity ahead. Good luck with your first steps on a path to a better life.

Welcome! 21 is a great age to get sober; as has been said by others, it took me much longer, say 20 additional years, to figure it out.

You can totally do this!
