And breathe...
And breathe...
As crazy as it sounds, I was reminded recently how good it is to breathe. I was at a class, completely unrelated to alcoholism, and at the end of it, we did a breathing exercise and it was wonderful.
This will come as no surprise or revelation to most, especially anyone up in their mindfulness, but it may help some. If you're anything like me with a non-stop mind or struggle to relax and sleep, this may help. It may also help if you're suffering from cravings. I've adapted it slightly.
Turn the lights down low or off.
Sit comfortably, preferably upright slightly on the edge of your chair, but whatever is comfortable for you.
Allow your shoulders to drop and for all tension to run out of your arms and other limbs.
Lower your head slightly.
Close your eyes.
Allow your mind to settle.
Focus on the sounds around you and not on the thoughts in your mind.
And breathe.
Start normally.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Slowly increase the depth of the inhale and the exhale.
Breathe in slowly and controlled.
Eventually breathe fully in, as if you've filled your body with air.
Breathe out slowly and fully, all the way out through your lungs and stomach.
Keep going until you peak (comfortably)
Keep going but gradually shortening your breaths, back to normal.
When you're back to normal, take a moment.
Slowly open your eyes.
Slowly lift your head.
Reacquaint yourself with your surroundings.
Feel refreshed, positive and confident.
Hope this helps someone.
