New to this... (Houston, TX)

Hi all,

I am a young professional in Houston, TX (DOS: 4/21/2015) and am looking for support and advice on activities to do while at home alone (I can only watch so much Netflix!) and to find opportunities to make new sober friends here in town. I am an atheist and I struggle with AA due to it feeling "pushy" about religion into my recovery.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi, SoberHTX.

Welcome to SR.

My tips for lonely time would be:
- read around SR - lots and lots of great info here and not only on recovery , but all the aspects of life (which are effected by recovery process anyway). I learned a lot here.

- workouts. If you have a gym membership - hit it more, try some different type of activity like yoga, etc. If not - it's time to invest in one. Great place to get new buddies too.

- Online courses in your professional area , some of them are free. I learned how to work with wordpress sites this way.

- walking/outdoors activities. It should be warm for this kind of stuff at Texas, right?

Best wishes to you. Keep posting.

What I plan to do is get back into playing guitar and reading books so you have any interest in music? Good for the soul....

My favorite thing to do depends a lot on the weather - it's walking my dogs. It clears my mind and makes me feel better.

The exercise and fresh air and sunshine really life my spirits.

Thank you all for the advice, I actually just got back from the gym for the first time in a couple of weeks and feel much better now. My Great Dane puppy that I just got always makes me smile when I get home and he is waiting to see me. I'm looking forward to him growing a bit to be able to go on walks and to the dog park.

Time to start cooking dinner (one of my other favorite hobbies)!

When I got sober, I started to play tennis again after a 30 year layoff. I've since joined a tennis club, and joined a USTA travel team. I have met dozens of new friends (of both sexes). I play several times a week, and literally could play with someone different everyday if I had the stamina!

That's what worked for me. Do you have an interest you could develop into a social outlet?

I'm in the Houston area, too. Not sure what you're into, but an hour north on i45 is the Sam Houston national forest and the Lonestar hiking trail. Lots of hiking, fishing, and camping available there. Me personally, I plan to start training Jujitsu as soon as I can afford it.
