Alcohol in the house

I'm cleaning house today. No desire to drink (8 days in). Dumped out an opened bottle of jack, an open bottle of wine, and the last 3 beers in the fridge (because beer is really my thing).

But, I have about the equivalent of 20 bottles of wine left. 3 of which are sentimental, my deceased grandfather made them, never planned to open them.

I kinda want to give them as gifts, but on the other hand I just don't know what to do with it, but I do want this stuff gone... Suggestions? Is this ridiculous?

I'd give them as gifts to someone(s) you know would like them. No reason to keep them if you're not drinking.

If having alcohol in the house concerns you as a risk to your sobriety...

get rid of it.

give it away.... but don't hang onto it using "I'll give it to so and so as a gift when I next see them" or make a list of 20 people you'll get round to giving it to.

Give it away, TODAY.

Why not donate to a local charity to raffle off or use for a fund raising event? (In the meantime, can a friend / family member store them for you if they're a danger one?)

That's a great idea. I will do that with the remainder.

Would your grandfather want you to drink yourself to death?

Throw it out.

Probably not, considering that was his cause of death....

There you go. I think he'd want you to throw all the alcohol out.

Something else. I may be a bit cold when it comes to this. I don't call it cold though, I call it self-preservation, common sense and doing what is best.

If a loved one were on their death bed. And they gave me some type of object and said: "Promise me you will always keep this." I will promise I will.

If at one point said object turns out to be a bad thing for me, I will throw it out without hesitation or guilt.

It's not wrong. It is the right thing to do. As long as I know I'm doing the right thing for the right reason, I can sleep peacefully.

It's almost all gone, from giving it away to dumping it out. Smell is nauseating.

Thank you, and it's not "cold", but realistic.

I'm glad you are finding ways to get rid of the alcohol. Having an alcohol free home has been really helpful to me.

If 3 of them are sentimental you could dump the booze out of them and use the bottles for something ornamental like a vase. Having alcohol in the house is a recipe for disaster.

Good for you! I'm still trying to get to the point of ridding what I have left.... I know I should. For some reason right now (AV) having it here is helping my anxiety even though I have no plans to drink it. Want to, don't want to, and won't. I liked the idea of keeping sentimental bottles for decorative purposes.

To be honest, this is a story your AV is telling you. Rationally, why would you be sentimental about a poison that ruins your life? I don't see them as decorative and to be honest, I don't think you do either, really. Your AV is making you think that.

Throw them out. Be done with it. It'll be a relief.

I would highly recommend you do. It's liberating. Another step on the right direction. Another way I've proven to myself that I'm serious.
