Need drug suggestions

I have severe nasal congestion and am not tolerant to sudafed, musinex, guafinesin, or other decongestants because, frankly, these drugs kinda make me feel buzzed, high, or something. And they absolutely give me thoughts about drinking again.

So those medications are off the table. No negotiations.

I know we cannot give medical advice. My question is, does anyone experience similar reaction to decongestants and what do you do (home remedies?) to cure severe congestion?

I'm under a doctor's care and they recommend decongestants (I said No) or antibiotics, which make me sick.

I drink a lot of fresh ginger tea, just chopped fresh ginger boiled in water. You can breathe in the steam as its brewing. It helps. You can re use the ginger for several rounds, just add more water. It gets nice and spicy the longer you let it steep.

Good luck.

Breathing over a bowl of hot water and vicks vaporub with a towel over your head does wonders for me.

Other than that, I've used a bulb to flush things out with weak salty warm water.

neither experience is pleasurable, but I've gotten relief from both.

^^^ This.

You may also want to Google "netty pot" and "saline nasal rinse".

Hope you find something that helps, SportsFan.

Alkalol - A natural Nasal wash, mucus solvent and cleaner.
You can buy that at Walgreens.
Comes with a nasal wash cup, alternative to neti pot.

Inhale steam with a few drops of Eucalyptus.

I've not had much success with a neti pot because nothing comes out. ( I believe the gunk is further into my head than my nose maybe?)

BUT I'm eager to try this bulb because the light pressure might help. NettI pot doesn't provide pressure.

Thank you all for the recommendations!

Hi SF-

I'm a big fan of Vicks vapor rub too.

I can't take decongestants either. There is a brand called Coricidin HBP that I am able to take and it doesn't bother me. It doesn't have classic decongestants, but works that way.

I hope you feel better soon!

What you might be feeling from some decongestants -- the kind you can only get from behind the pharmacy -- is pseudoephedrine, which is used in meth. The regular sudafed doesn't have that. Do you have allergies? I've found Nasalcort (sp?) or one of those types of nasal sprays to be effective. There are also these aromatherapy machines that use natural oils to scent a room. Eucalyptus would be a good one to try,
