Awaiting friends at the bar

It occurs to me that one of the main reasons people drink is to remove anxiety. I sit here and the only reason I'm tempted is the alone-ness. When they arrive I'll be fine. But wow the temptation comes suddenly.

Hi, SportsFan15; is this your first time in a bar since beginning your sobriety?

Order a sparkling water or soda or an appetizer now to distract you.

Do you have an exit plan if you begin to feel fragile?

Great job logging in here to talk.

Why are you at a bar?

Might be best to wait for your friends next door to the bar, or down the street at some other store so you arent tempted out of boredom... Im not sure I could be doing that right about now.

I dunno sportsfan - I know the preconception is bars are where people meet, but over the last 8 years I've never met friends in a bar - cafes are good, movies, pizza parlours... but never bars.

I'm a non drinker.

The only time I have a reason to be in a bar is to play music, and I rarely do that these days - it's mostly cafes and other places.

I find bars deathly boring.
Not being in one removes a lot of angst, y'know?

I'll be facing returning to gigging in bars later this year, but right now, and when I do return, my sobriety is and will be of prime important.

When I used to gig, I'd have a club soda with lime to avoid going onstage buzzed, and also to quell well-wishers from pushing drinks on me. Maybe that'll work for you?

It's the meeting place for these people and im.out of town...I always have a coke and when they arrive, I'm fine. I enjoy the camaraderie of places like this and it's not even noticeable that I'm not drinking. The atmosphere is awesome because these are normal drinkers who don't drink to excess.

I meant to add that I agree about having an exit plan. Also, I am willing to cancel plans like this if needed, anytime. I find that I can be around "normal" drinkers who are drinming moderately occasionally, as in once every 3-4 months. The moment someone seems buzzed, I'm ready to leave if needed!

I also want to say thank you to all of you who responded and that I very much AGREE that being in a bar is risky behavior! I do not want to minimize that truthful message.
