out out and on the tonic
Well first night out since a long time with a group of new people from work....and it went fine!
I arrived late which was a good plan, because everybody was already Sat down with drinks. So ordered myself a slimline Tonic at the bar! Sat down and no one looked at me or thought I was strange !! Ordered my meal and people were starting to relax, get louder, order another round. So I ordered another slimline, no one asked why I wasn't drinking, it was just accepted. I feel a great relief that I have done this. I had about 4 more drinks as others were drinking booze, but not once did I feel any urge to drink. In fact, there were several silences tonight and I was aware that I didn't feel the need to fill in the gaps with pointless garbage conversation like I normally would. I listened instead of talked, and really enjoyed the night. My plan was always to leave straight after coffee, which I did. So I survived, and never once felt awkward. Plus more importantly, can hold my head up high tomorrow when I walk into work! No anxiety at the thought of forgetting half the night and stumbling out of the door, getting verbal diarrhoea and embarrassing myself!
