New Evidence of Powerlessness
There is new evidence that our brains are powerless over alcohol. A recent study shows that motor neurons are not simply output neurons. "This implies that motor neurons actively participate in the generation of locomotor behaviour." ("New Look at motor Neuron Activity," Nature vol 529 p. 157, 14 January 2016.)
To me this means that our hand can decide to pick up a drink without our mind knowing it.

I wouldn't be an expert on the ins and outs, but in isolation the real side of addiction was far too powerful at times for my rational decision making processes!!
Having support around me, something to short circuit those addictive thoughts made all the difference!!
