Coach Me Thru A Strong Craving
I've been plagued by a craving for several hours now.
I'm comfortably home, watching the Republican debate. There's no alcohol in the house and the store is closed.
I'm also craving sweets. I ate a Cadbury egg a while ago and enjoyed it A LOT. But the cravings persist. I'm going to make a glass of chocolate milk now.

Chocolate milk sounds amazing.. since I got sober I have been obsessed with chocolate!
Its really great that you are talking about your feelings, cravings are okay.. One thing that really helped me to remember is when I would complain about having urges to drink or thoughts about drinking, someone told me that it is okay, Im an alcoholic, of course from time to time I will have thoughts about drinking. They are just thoughts and they pass..
Stay strong, you are doing so well and it gets easier with time

In early sobriety, I found it helpful to look for distractions. You'll find that the cravings pass when you're thinking about something else.
I sometimes took a shower just to get my mind focused on the warm comfort of water. The delights of smelling fragrant soap felt good.
My own journey was a little different. I went sober on my own and joined SR two months later (and hurting). If I could do it all over again, I'd look into aromatherapy, for one thing. It's also late in the evening, but a good, invigorating walk is a wonderful way to get distracted.
Another thing: Laugh. Early in sobriety, I'd google funny bits on youtube. I'd search TV for good, belly laugh-inducing humor. My favorite: "Frasier."

SiS,
Good for you reaching out. From what you describe, the common thread seems to be sugar. Maybe along with the chocolate egg/milk you might consider stabilising your blood glucose via a small sandwich that includes protein.
You might also check with your doctor about your blood glucose and/or get a home kit such as those used by diabetics. I have one that plugs into the USB port of a PC and automatically measures things.
Good luck, you can do it!

I should mention that it's been a busy day. Boredom/idle time wasn't the problem. The craving seems physical, and it came out of nowhere.
You've detoxed. I wouldn't think the craving are physical. They may be manifesting themselves as physical, which might be a trick of your addiction. You are in the mental obsession stage, which is tough.
Stay strong.

Political debates make me want to drink, too! Sorry, just a little political humor there :-) But seriously, indulge your sweet tooth again, chocolate milk is a good idea. When I first quit drinking, I craved sweets like never before. Indulging, particularly in chocolate, really helped with alcohol cravings. Having been a wine drinker, I assume it had to do with the abrupt cessation of the copious amounts of sugar in the wine. Hang in there SIS

Eat something. That will physically reduce some of the cravings. Secondly, picture yourself waking up tomorrow morning feeling great and so relieved that you didn't drink. That bottle of wine (or whatever your drink of choice) would love nothing more than to see you dead.

Thanks, guys. The siren song seems to have passed.
I drank so much chocolate milk that I now have a tummyache, LOL!
This was exactly the type of craving that derailed me on my previous two attempts at sobriety. I was better prepared this time -- I recognized it for what it was, fought it with sugar, and asked for help!
It bothered me almost all day, but it's passed now. Lots of sugar and a very full belly!!!
Phew. Thanks again!

Glad to hear you stayed strong and got through. It is not comfortable but definitely 'getthroughable' , remember that , congratulations on building some sober muscle, who said a little sugar can't build muscle
