When I'm not a slave to alcohol ...
I realized yesterday while having a late lunch with my husband that I can actually start dreaming again. I have always wanted to participate in some kind of mission trip. I volunteered for years for a large US based environmental advocacy non-profit, but never took part in any of the outdoor adventures because ... where would I stash my wine? And how could I spend several evenings outdoors without my wine?
Wow. What a revelation. If I'm not chained to the bottle, I can really be free. <3

Congratulations
I'm still amazed after 8 years without a drink regarding the true freedom of not being married to the liquid devil.
I also when drinking stayed away from many places, better jobs and people due to my drinking habits.
Enjoy

It is a great feeling when we begin to comprehend our true freedom. Heck, getting in the car at 7pm and driving somewhere was new to me - that was my first taste of real freedom.
Early in sobriety I was so very grateful that I thought I should sell everything and become a missionary in Haiti or Africa. That cloud was incredible I was floating on!
There is no doubt many of us in recovery give so much more to our fellow man than simply take, take, take based on our selfish behavior when drinking. It reminds me of the book my grandkids have - Oh the places you'll Go!
The key as we know is indeed staying sober, stacking time and working towards recovery.
Your post is very inspirational - Thanks for it today!!

I can completely relate to this. Knowing I can get into my car and go somewhere whenever I want is so freeing!
