What not to say to an alcoholic.....

Just a fun list of things people have said to you about being an alcoholic, what things have you found unhelpful and frustrating!

"But you weren't THAT bad" is my personal favourite....

Erm yes I was.... Alcoholics are the master of deception, just coz I did most of my drinking alone doesn't mean bad stuff it didn't happen lol

"You can drink on special occasions tho, that wont do any harm" is another......

Are you crazy?! No I cant drink on special occasions lol im an recovering alcoholic what part of that don't you understand?!

My husband " you can drink tonight but only one bottle of wine"

No such thing as just one anything where alcoholics are concerned.

...If you were an alcoholic, you wouldn't have been able to go this long without a drink. So, you've proven your point. Now, have a drink...

My personal favourites come from when I first got Sober and re entered into the world of going to watch ice hockey games, and upon stating I wasn't drinking this evening for the frist time I was met with a few gems:

-"You're having a beer and that's final"
-"Are you *****
-"Don't be so boring"
-"Sure have the one"
-"Why? are you driving?"
-"What's the point of coming to a game if you can't have a beer?"
-"Well I'm getting smashed"

You quickly figure out those friendships that are worth anything and those people to let go by the wayside!!

I have to say though coffee at a game has it's plus sides, there is usually a cake sale on the go for charity, and I used to always bypass it as cake and beer never really went together, whereas now I always stop off for something to go with my coffee and a chat with the vendors!!

"You were a lot more fun when you were drinking."

Yeah? Fun for who. . .certainly not me. Others don't see the hangover, and feeling that you are functioning at 10% the next day, or until the next drink.

The most common "Andrew one beer will not push you over the edge" I smile today because they simply do not know or understand what I do.

I worked on a massive fruit farm until Christmas, we have around 100 migrant workers, many I was very close to "Andrew our beer isn't good enough for a Canadian? Just have one" you see the AV loved this comment because its saying are you really going to let them down, what message are you sending by not having just one, come one it's just one" yes it was just one, 36 days later I woke up

What not to say to an alcoholic....

It's all in your head. You're not an
alcoholic.

You're not sick anymore.

Why do you continue to say you're
an alcoholic when you don't drink
anymore.

You are using I'm an alcoholic in
recovery as an excuse to hide behind.

"You can't quit drinking, you'll be so boring without alcohol!"
"Your liver's fine, what's the big deal?"

I've also heard "You're not pouring vodka into a water bottle so you're fine." Totally not a measure of alcoholism but what's ironic is that I actually had a water bottle filled with vodka in my bag at that time!

"You are not an alcoholic....you were never homeless, clutching a paper bag on the Boston Common. You have a job, a condo, a car...you're fine! Just cut back."

After being sober 2 months "You are not an alcoholic...no alcoholic could quit drinking for 2 months!"

"Wow, I can't believe you drank that whole bottle of Skinnygirl Margarita" Ummm yeah...it only has 37.5 ABV....soooooo

Great stuff.

My favourites are already here, but they all involve, you don't have a problem, you can just have one, its a party, and the like.

Love the comment about the vodka in the water bottle. Do all aliens have the same brain??
