Here I am again
I woke up at 4:00 AM and realized I have been drinking for 30 years. I'm 56 with 4 grown children. I laid here trying to remember when it all started. I was 26 and my marriage of 5 years was over. I had 2 children and was a single mom. I drank to cope, to sleep and forget.
I remarried a wonderful man, had 2 more children but couldn't stop,
I want today to be the day I stick with my commitment. I found this site googling " can you quit after drinking for 30 years?"
I have never been in a group before.

Dear Bookworm - welcome! There are some great resources on this site, as well as many supportive people. There are people who have stayed sober on here, some for many years, who provide wonderful guidance. I have found the insights I gained here have helped me understand my addiction to alcohol and they are leading me to take positive concrete steps to fix it. Thanks to this site, I have realised it is very difficult to try and give up alcohol on your own. If you can get help from a doctor and/or counsellor that would be a plus. It's so very hard to figure out yourself what you need to stay sober. Please stay on the site - it can only help.
Welcome, Bookworm! Please continue reading and writing on this forum. There's a wealth of information and support here and if you're ready, this is the perfect place to be to make the most important change in your life.

Never to late
Welcome. Here is where you belong. I am 66 yrs old started booze at 15. Daily drunk since 35. I am now on day 11 and will never pour poison down my throat again. Please tag along.
Welcome to SR, Bookworm.
You can definitely achieve sobriety and lasting recovery. As others have said, it is a good idea to involve your doctor in your plans to stop drinking. Face to face support can also be invaluable.
You have found a wonderful forum for support, understanding and encouragement; read around the site; there is so much information and wisdom to be found.

Welcome Bookworm.
I'm 55, with a grown son and four sweet grandkids. I have drank too, most of my adult life, but the progression has been worse the last ten years.
You will love SR, a lot of great people here, and support. Good to have you.

Welcome Bookworm!
We're a similar age with a similar history with alcohol! I had my own damascene moment on 17 the October 2015, after finding this site through Google.
I've been sober since!
I had some pretty weird symptoms for the first week in particular, so reading the "What to Expect" in Recovery, on here was SO helpful.
It's a super site, supportive and informative. I read it everyday.
Well done for taking the first step, I'm so glad I did.
Take care

To all of you who replied.
I made it out of the house without kneeling beside the bed, taking a swig of bourbon, slipping it back under the bed and heading out the door. I have read some of the blogs and realize I am not alone. Thank you, thank you.
Now to make it through the rest of the day.
I appreciate your kindnesses.:

Eight and a half months sober here (I'm so proud!) after 30+ years of drinking.
So yes you can do it, not easy at times and the early days might be tough, BUT SO WORTH IT. Keep reading, keep posting and do what ever you need to do to clock up a day at a time.
Good luck xx
