Thanks SW. I enjoyed both of them and I'm going to forward the links to my daughter who also suffers from depression. Just like her dad. I only wish there was some how to use minfulness in the first video.

Have you read Jon Kabat Zinn's wherever you go there you are

It's a book on everyday mindfulness I liked it a lot I try to pay attention on purpose I try to stay away from auto pilot & letting my thoughts run its not easy for me but I'm getting there slowly

Meditation & breathing exercises really help too as done light walking

If you want more info feel free to pm bud

I've read and can really recommend this book too - I find he explains mindfulness in a contemporary and clear way. One bit I like is where he talks about a poster he has of an elderly monk on a surfboard with the caption 'You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf'. Mindfulness helps me with sobriety because, whenever I experience thoughts, feelings, impulses, sensations etc. about alcohol, if I practice seeing them for what they actually are, that is as mere thoughts and feelings, then I don't self-identify and get caught up in them - get 'caught up in thought'. For example, if the thought occurs that it may be OK to have a mulled wine because it's Christmas I would naturally start to analyse and agonize over this and look at all the pros and cons etc. But if I try to apply mindfulness to the situation - one technique I like is simply to name the thought or feeling so I could just say 'this is a thought, and a pretty silly one!, about drinking' - I achieve a separation from the thought and don't get carried away in a mindstream of obsessing and commentating on the thought. As Kabat-Zinn says, when awareness touches a thought or feeling they 'self-liberate' - they just don't go anywhere, like soap bubbles that you touch.

You Know , talking about mindfulness and specifically Buddhism
Buddhism in a Nutshell - Is Buddhism a Religion
interests me very much . I have dipped in and out of reading materials and youtube videos on mindfulness but never really stayed with it .
It is part of my plan to delve into this more as I move forward .

Thanks SW

This is excellent Soberwolf.
I love seeing the actual science behind mindfulness - the practice can really change the brain and this gives me a lot of hope.

Thank you

I currently do 15 to 20 minutes of mindful meditation daily. Am also doing 6 days a week of exercise, 3 days aerobic and 3 weights. I just started Kabat Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living. And have read his The Mindul Way Through Depresion. It all helps but I'm still not where I want to be. I've been off meds for almost a year but I'm most likely going to go back on them. I'm currently looking for a new dr. My old dr let me down by not calling back multiple times trying to set up an appointment.

I have to admit that all the times I've been on meds, and it's been many over the years, I've also been drinking. I want this time to be different.I just passed 90 days so I'm on my way to that.

SW I like how you explore these alternative concepts .
I was just saying ( ranting ) to the Mrs last night about how many of us are too interested in THINGS, we look for happiness in a new TV ,car , smartphone , etc etc .
While it is beneficial to have nice things we place too much importance on them .( I am being a bit hypocritical if i'm honest as I have all the latest gadgets) but I want to change and get closer to nature and a simpler life style .....Part of my plan going forward . Yes I have quite a few changes to make but all very doable.

SW, I loved Jon Kabat-Zinn's 'Wherever you go, There you are', too. It took me a long time to really make Mindfulness work for me. For decades, I had operated on auto-pilot and my brain constantly went back to all the negative things, over and over again. Finally, sticking with Mindfulness, I have found peace of mind.
