Joe, you are at a crisis point, as you describe it. Never waste a good crisis.
GOOD NEWS AHEAD==> It ends when you say it ends. You don't need a white light or a horrendous jail/hospital experience. "Rock bottom" is the place you stop digging. (Well said, Bim!)

Welcome, Joe!

Stick around here - in my early sobriety I almost lived on the threads of the forum, and it was a humangous help.

As for the moment of realization... I was somewhat like you - could go for a long stretch time without a drink. Then thought that if I could do it then I had not problem. Plus hurtful memories faded away. So "just one" is ok. And we all know where "just one" ends. At some moment I did realize I had enough. When next day after not being able to stop I felt like dying, and still 3-4 days later the circle repeated itself. And again. And again. At first complete "no go" to alcohol felt scary, but in reality it is not. I am 3+ years without a drink now - and don't miss it a bit.

So, make today your Day 1 and don't look back. Life is life, with its ups and downs. Sometimes hell hurtful downs, and still - it's' so much better sober.

Best wishes to you.

Boy, that's a mouthful, Joe.

I was pretty worried about what everyone else thought about me, too. Thing is I couldn't keep everyone else happy. I had to accept that some people aren't going to like me and there is nothing I can do about that.

I also felt close to suicidal at the end of my drinking. Adding a chemical depressant to an already dysfunctional thought pattern is a recipe for disaster. The further away I got from my last drink, the happier I felt in general. It takes a while, though. 3-4 weeks is just barely enough time to get on an even keel. It took me months of abstinence until I had control of my emotions and my reactions.

Set yourself a goal, like six months minimum. Wait and see just how great you are feeling at six months sober.

Hi Melina! Finn is doing great. His nights are unsettled so we are both very sleep deprived. But we are getting through it.

Hey Melina... Ears perked???

Seven rib pork roast. Will make it tomorrow while decorating that dang tree... made a brine of sea salt, cracked pepper, fresh chopped garlic, and fresh rosemary... ahhh... I love the wake-up-your-brain smell of rosemary.

Great to catch up on this thread this evening, it has given me new strength. My last drink was last Saturday night, so this is my first Saturday night without a drink. I used to drink pretty much every night, so why Saturday is any different I don't know, but it's been a bit of a struggle at times today. That said I'm still here and when I wake up in the morning it will be one whole week! :-)

Don't know about Melina, but roast description is killing me! Guess I'll go root through the leftovers.

Just finished up "Linner" cause it was lunch and pre-dinner for us ... roasted chicken, brussels in butter, sweet potato drenched in more butter, and leftover tortellini soup with shaved parmesan, followed by raspberry cheese danish and chai with whipped cream! I ate nothing for breakfast, so ...
