Talking New member

Hello everyone, I'm new to this chat room and I am a wife of an alcoholic who is currently serving time in jail for his 4th DUI. He has about 6 more months before he will be release. Our first wedding anniversary will be next month and I will be spending it alone. I also have two children from a previous marriage. I asked my husband to stop drinking when he gets out of jail if he wants to stay together as a family. Any advice??

Hi and welcome. I am sorry that you will be spending your first anniversary alone. My advice to you would be to take care of yourself and your children. Your husband, unfortunately, will only quit drinking when he decides he wants to. I know that is tough to hear. As an alcoholic myself, I can say the thing that might have the biggest impact on me, forcing me to really look at the results of my drinking, would be strong words and decisive follow through on your part. Just saying "I want you to stop drinking so we can stay together as a family" will probably have less impact than "I will no longer accept your drinking. If, when you get out of jail, you return to drinking I will leave you." the important part is that you follow through on this and actually leave.
It sounds harsh, and it is, but wishy-washy words have little affect on us alcoholics.
There is also a friends and family section here. As an alcoholic myself, though currently sober, I can try my best to offer you advice, but in the friends and family section there are people who can relate to exactly what you are feeling.
You are welcome on any section here though, although sorry for the reason you are here, we are happy to have you and glad you reached out.
Take care.

Welcome and sorry to hear of your troubles with your Husband. You may want to try the friends and family forum here as well, there are many others who are in situations similar to yours, and they have advice on how you can help yourself and your children to deal with this unfortunate situation.
