Friday done, just Saturday to go

Hey guys

The weekends are always the worst for me after working hard all week.

Yesterday I finished work and then came home to cook the evening meal for my wife and kids. I then got changed and went to the gym for the last hour that it is open. I find it useful to plan going to the gym late as that keeps me out of trouble during the day. It is then quite late by the time I get home and so not much time to think about drink.

I got home after training, had a very large glass of Iron-Bru (a scottish fizzy drink available in the UK). This took away the cravings until I went to bed an hour later.

Woke up happy, only today to get through.

Good going! I also use the gym to keep me in line. You are smart to put a plan in place and follow it through. Keep it up!

Some things that helped me (saved my life) when I was in the grips of struggling in my early sobriety ...

My sponsor suggested I say the 3rd step prayer when I woke up each morning, and again periodically throughout the day.

Someone at a meeting said they repeated the phrase 'God direct my thinking ... God direct my thinking ... God direct my thinking' when the obsession to drink was pure terror, or the thoughts were overwhelming that ONLY a drink could make the terrors subside.

I found a lot of really good Speaker Messages to listen to by doing Web Searches for Recovery Speakers.

Then ... while doing these things (and following more suggestions from my Sponsor and others in the AA program) ... the REAL change in me came thru working the 12 Steps.

RDBplus3 ... Happy, Joyous and FREE ... and I KNOW U can B 2

Iron,

6 months clean and proudly never drinking again here.

I am educated on the brain damage alcohol causes. Don't need that.

I work out at least 4 times a week..sometimes a bit more.

The gym is filled w people that don't drink. They are the ones that look amazing.

The drunks are not there. I know I wasn't.

Alcohol is poison.

Well done. There is no greater feeling than waking up early after having gone to bed sober.

Working out (I was a runner) didn't work for me. It made me thirsty and I drank a lot of beer. It was actually a trigger for me....but glad it works for you.. Iron-Bru? Sounds good, I will check it out.

Iron Bru, "it's made from girders"

More sugar in it than something with lots & lots of sugar in, and tastes a bit like old fashioned bubble gum. Meh

Ironically it used to be my beverage of choice for getting over hangovers.

Good luck to you Dan!

Hi guys

I love Iron Bru!!!

It is now evening time in the UK and I am getting ready for another busy week, so I thought I would check in.

Sat here with a cold glass of my trusty (now sugar free) Iron Bru after a shower following another visit to the gym.

Yesterday I asked my wife to give me a list of all the jobs around the house that I have never got done, so I kept busy most of the day doing that. Really helped in the afternoon as thats when the beer grazing would start. That kept me occupied until about 7:00PM and at that point everything started to get a little difficult. I had worked hard all day, did I not deserve a treat?

My wife noticed that I was getting a little moody, so she said that we should go shopping in the morning (today) to buy me some new clothes. Lots of training and no alcohol does make you look better and I need some new clothes to fit. That along with a fizzy water with lime and ice helped.

I can keep myself busy working now until I go to bed, so overall a successful weekend.

I may be checking in again next Friday if you all dont mind just to keep me on track.

Christmas is around the corner, that will be the hardest test.

Good stuff! I am really glad to hear of your sober weekend. What a good idea to get to work on the house. How did the clothes shopping go?
Definitely check in here next weekend, but why not check in during the week as well?
Look forward to seeing you soon, and sober! have a great week.
